postgraduate In the UK at least, 'postgraduate' includes Masters students, as well as other students undertaking postgraduate certificates, etc. 'Promovierende' would not be included amongst these groups of students, since as a term it refers to the doctoral level.

postgraduate is more common for "Promovierende", if taken generally. 'doctoral candidates' might be used for the 2nd year studends (Doktoranden)

Hi Jonathan - to my mind 'doctoral candidates' is exactly right. Not all PhD students will be candidates for the PhD but Promovierende, in my understanding, are.
