Shrinking (fading) violet

English to French Art/Literary Idioms / Maxims / Sayings
Meaning an extremely shy & timid person. Any pretty idiomatic expressions for this in French?

It depends

If it's a man or a woman... but I guess "shrinking violet" could hardly apply to a man...

So... in a context of love, there is this idiomatic expression "vierge effarouchée", but that has often a sarcastic connotation...

Another version, though, without the sarcasm, would be this one : "biche effarouchée"
Type it in Google, and you'll find many instances of this one...

For a person, that is living its life in a shy and hidden way, one could say : "c'est une petite souris". (Link below)

To note "biche effarouchée" would apply better to a cute woman when "petite souris" would better apply to a little old lady or a child...

agree Yolanda Broad : Oui. biche / souris, selon le cas. Il faut comparaison/métaphore concrète pour maintenir le registre en anglais.

agree Myriam Dupouy : Oui, "faire sa violette" aussi (mais je ne l'ai que très très rarement entendue)...Mais sinon comme ça j'aurais utilisé "timide comme une petite souris"...

English term (edited): shrinking violet

sensitive OU personne sensible et timide

These are the suggestions given in R+C.

I must say I've never come across the expression 'fading violet' before in EN, and it sounds rather wrong to me; 'fading' of a flower suggests wilting, dying, which is not at all the same metaphor as 'shrinking'.
Note from asker:
I think this is one of those expressions that become corrupted over time by mixed metaphors. It seems I've only heard 'fading violet' in recent times whereas I know the original expression is 'shrinking'. Put both to be sure.
Peer comment(s):

neutral ormiston : unless there is humour intended and the demure young lady is now past her sell-by date - would e nice to know why both terms are posted! in any case 'shrinking violet' sounds rather quaint nowadays
