If I found the right article you are working on http://www.geophysik.rwth-aachen.de/html/geothermik_stroemun... , this is about figuring out the path of groundwater movement by measuring watertemperatures in various levels of the subsurface.
Wir versuchen in diesem Projekt Grundwasserbewegungen zu bestimmen, indem wir ihre Wirkung auf das Temperaturfeld im Untergrund analysieren. Dazu untersuchen wir Temperaturmessungen in Bohrungen und versuchen, die unterschiedlichen Einflüsse auf die Messung von einander zu trennen. Ziel der Arbeiten ist eine Abschätzung von regionalen Fliessgeschwindigkeiten des Grundwassers.
Groundwater **flow** would also work, but in this specific context I think that the term groundwater movement fits better. "Flow" seems more local to me, while "movement" is rather used to describe the path groundwater takes in a larger area. The goal of this test seems to be an evaluation of the safety of potential deposits of waste/radioactive material.
The path of groundwater movement may be short and simple or incredibly complex, depending on the geology of the areas through which the water passes. The complexity of the path also determines the length of time a molecule of water remains in the ground between recharge and discharge points.
