Italian term

post-sessantottino

Italian to English Other Slang
I am translating a piece for somebody who describes their dress sense as occasionally 'post-sessantottino'. I have so far figured out that 'sessantottino' means somebody who was involved in the activities of 1968 so possibly it means something like 'old hippy'. However I have also seen this man dress and he looks nothing like the British/American concept of an old hippy. Any suggestion?
Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): BdiL

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

"post 68"

This will never mean a lot to anybody who has not either experienced or read about the history of those years. Personally, at an Isle of Wight festival in those years, Italian, French and German people at the event explained quite clearly to us "love is all you need" English hippies, that the '68 movement was a very different phenomenon in their countries and of course we knew that anyway from reading the news (a certain Jean Paul Sartre played a prominent role). So I think that a simple "post 68" will do, unless some fashion expert knows more on the subject of course.

In response to Mirra's "I could find NO EVIDENCE AT ALL of 'post 68'"
The sense in which I have suggested it is simply that of "after the '68 movement, phenomenon, style, fashion or however you wish to label it" giving the Isle of Wight and Jean Paul Sartre as a general pointer. Of course I didn't post without checking against empirical evidence on Google. The problem is eliminating instances of "Post #68" and "American legion post 68", but there are plenty of examples if you care to sift and look and I do find your capital letters, and emphatic tone, suggesting that I post of the top of my head offensive Mirra_. However, I thought the phrase sufficiently well known and self evident, not to need references. I was evidently mistaken:

agree Katia DG : A rigor di logica, "post-sessantottino" dovrebbe indicare uno stile o una visione del mondo che ha superato le idee sessantottine.

agree Rachel Fell : yes, somehow I didn't really think it would be like my examples on that page ;-)

disagree Mirra_ : I could find NO EVIDENCE AT ALL of 'post 68' used in the way you and Katia suggested... ;D Please, do you have any example to show us? :) R: evidence???? ahahhahahahahahah please..... :)
12 hrs
I have now given abundant evidence. Mirra_ could you please provide an explanation of why my refs don't constitute evidence, as this might be useful to a glossary reader, rather than your hardly courteous "??"s and smiles, which reflect only your opinions

post-soixante-huitard style

post-settantottino implies a cultural and political connotation stronger than late sixties or early seventies style, in my opinion

(1) “Hats are always in,” says RNCNotWelcome.org, an activist Website that urges protesters to wear baseball caps to avoid surveillance cameras. But baseball caps are so boy-band. Instead, suggests Bouwer, why not take a tip from Madonna (or Monica) and don a stylishly subversive French beret? Very soixante-huitard.

former/old '68 activist

hi it was a very interesting challenge: different Countries different way to undertake political committment... ;)) and so same meaning words can develop very different meaning...

anyway I guess this is the definition that more closely translate the Italian meaning... :)

Of course, nobody has ever said that 'post 68' has not a meaning for itself.... but this is not the point dear Jim.......
ahahahhahahahahhaha :))

If only Jim would care reading what he calls """"""evidences""""""" he will understand that 'post 68' is always used to define a time period or, at maximum, the cultural movements born in those years but is NEVER USED - AS IT IS IN ITALIAN - to describe a person.
Peer comment(s):

agree BdiL : Aptly you did not translate style (not in the question). [Forget about "hippy & retro"!!]

hahah grazie!

yes, for sure! :) (even in some cases political activism revealed to be a sort of fashion trend ;))

thank you very much! :))
disagree Katia DG : Former 68 activist would be ex sessantottino in Italian, or simply sessantottino. The "post" implies, in my opinion, that the style we are talking about is something that came after 68 and got over it.
13 hrs
*WOULD be* exactly. In this case, despite the importance of your opinion, in *general* opinion 'post' is used with the same meaning you attribute to 'ex'. Give a look around in the web if you don't believe it... :)
