Spanish term

tresillo

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Furniture / Household Appliances sofás más sillones/butacas

Anne Smith Campbell (asker) Jul 11, 2008:
Just to make it clear, although I think it's clear by my descripction of the DRAE,I do not mean a sofa that stands three seatings (three-seater sofa) as dictionaries say...

three-piece suite

At least in U.K. this is the only way to say this.

if it is with other pieces, it is a set.
Note from asker:
Thanks bigdesenior, it is not quite the explanation I'm after. There is no "section", I may have not made that clear,...sorry. It's just simply a sofa, not sectionable plus two armchairs. In Spain they call it "tresillo": a sofa plus two armchairs. As I said in my explanation it is a text of about ten years old, minimum...I'm looking probably for an old fashioned term to refer to (non sectionable) sofa plus two armchaires.

sofa and two matching armchairs

I don't remember any special term for this grouping, just "sofa and matching armchair" or "sofa and two matching armchairs". Of course, it could be a 2- or 3-seat(er) softa, but that's another question.

It is true that "3-piece suite" is also used, but often with a clarifying "3+1+1", "3+2+1", "3 seater sofa, a 2 seat sofabed and an armchair" or something like that.

disagree Cristina Morales Burgess : a tresillo is simply a 'three piece-suite', not a 'sofa' + 'armchairs'.

Thanks for your opinion, but just because it isn't common in the UK doesn't mean it isn't correct. (www.peterguild.co.uk/singleStyle.htm) A "neutral" would have been more polite. :-)
