The Degree of Physician & Surgeon

That's how it's said.

--------------------------------------------------

You\'re lucky it does not say \"Médico Cirujano y Partero\". Not a \"midhusband\" of course, but a \"Birth Attendant\". It\'s actually part of the official name, they can all at least deliver a baby supposedly.

This is just the general medical degree; from this they can go into a medical specialty.

Physician and Surgeon

In the USA we use M.D. (medical doctor), which includes training in both medicine and surgery. However, when translating the name of a Mexican medical degree I would suggest this option.

Surgeon degree

Declined
Surgeon alone captures the idea of Médico Cirujano. In other words, there are no surgeons that are not medical in some way or another.

degree in surgical medicine / degree in surgery

In the UK as a first (or undergraduate) degree you would just get a BA in medicine and then specialise later on.

the subject you describe, sounds more like something that would be offered at masters level - see below:

My contribution to complement the suggestions given by other colleagues

My contribution to complement the suggestions given by Henry, Alan and Chadwick:

The problem here is complex:

On the one hand, the commonest first university degree in the USA is “Bachelor” (usually 4 years), and in our countries (at least in Venezuela) is “Licenciado” (usually 5 years).

On the other hand, the case of physicians is special:

Firstly, they are not called “bachelors” in the USA or “licenciados” in this part of the continent.

Secondly, the course of study that they follow differs from those of other “licenciaturas”: In Venezuela (and I believe that also in Mexico), upon graduation (undergraduate course of study: 7 years), they are conferred the degree of “Médico Cirujano”.

But for legal and practical purposes, this degree of “Médico Cirujano” is equivalent to any other “licenciatura”, and to that of a Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery, according to R.J. Chadwick’s references.

To become “Cirujanos”, the “médicos cirujanos” must follow a post-graduate course in surgery (at least 2 years).

Degree in Medicine and Surgery.
The Degree of Physician & Surgeon

Thus, as these colleagues say, and in spite of the common use of M.D. in the USA, it is preferably to use “Degree in Medicine and Surgery” or “Degree of Physician & Surgeon” because it is both descriptive, and “degree” may be “bachelor”, “licentiate” or any other.

Saludos cordiales desde Caracas.

Manuel

medical doctor

A bilingual Mexican physician whose diploma I translated assured me that "medical cirujano" corresponds nothing more than "medical doctor". To call a "médico cirujano" a surgeon would be reading too much into the title.
