German term

Handlagen

German to English Social Sciences Environment & Ecology
From an academic paper on urbanization and biodiversity:

Es ist für rasch wachsende Städte in Entwicklungsländern nicht selten, dass die Vororte in die umgebenden Handlagen wachsen und nicht nur die regionale biologische Vielfalt bedrohen, sondern zudem auch noch selber Naturkatastrophen wie Erdrutschen ausgesetzt werden.

German term (edited): Randlagen

peripheral areas / fringe areas

IMHO this is a typo for "Randlagen" (synonymous with "Randzonen", "Randbereiche"), rather than "Hanglagen". After all, urban sprawl does not occur exclusively in hilly areas/hillside locations.

The H instead of the R could also be the result of poor OCR performance.

As you can see from our differing interpretations, it'd be the safest bet (IMHO) to ask the customer for clarification (provided your context does not include any other clue favouring one of the suggestions posted).
Peer comment(s):

neutral Teresa Reinhardt : Don't the Erdrutsche suggest hills? Otherwise, your suggestion would also make sense//You're right, so sorry! ;-)

Possible but not certain - no reason for a disagree, though (IMHO). Armorel will know best what to use on the basis of further context.
