The Isomerisation plant in a refinery converts low octane blending feeds into higher octane components for blending to unleaded regular gasoline.
Part of this equipment, the Raffinate Splitter is effectively a fractionation tower that takes non-aromatic streams from an Aromatics Recovery Unit.
The Splitter heats and distils raffinate to produce heavy raffinate - which is blended directly into gasoline - and light raffinate - used as a feed to the isomerisation process.
The resulting Splitter is a heated, single fractionating column, 164 ft tall with 70 distillation trays with a 2 foot spacing and has an adjacent Blowdown Stack.
