English term

blow job

May offend English Art/Literary Slang
Hello, late night type of question here
inspired by the discusion we have here:
http://www.proz.com/kudoz/2485772
where my Polish colleagues maintain that the expression
is STRICTLY reserved for men, hence all the negative comments.

Am I mistaken thinking it's good for both? (excuse the pun ;))

Hahahha :) Go, Mark! :))
Mark Berelekhis Mar 20, 2008:
Speaking from experience first (as per Olga's request).
Mark Berelekhis Mar 20, 2008:
'Giving head' DOES go in both directions. Eva, that's probably what your friends were thinking of.

2. give head

Either to perform fellatio on a male, or cunnilingus on a female.

Karolina Olga Mar 20, 2008:
Dear All, how about "giving head"? one or two directions? please, first refer to your own experience of the expression. then consult the net and dictionaries.
Ewa Nowicka (asker) Mar 20, 2008:
Kim it's 22,500,000 without quotation marks, but I admit, Google does dodgy count and omits the key word "her"; so it's actually 33 hits, plus 14 for "giving" plus 8 for "gave"; plus most of my "real life" native friends say it's OK, but I don't mean to argue with language experts and I do appreciate everyone's comments here
Kim Metzger Mar 20, 2008:
Searching a phrase without putting it in quotation marks is meaningless.
Ewa Nowicka (asker) Mar 20, 2008:
"give her a blow job" 28,700 hits
Mihaela Ghiuzeli Mar 20, 2008:
Nine hits on google doesn't sound like much; also the first lines about "fellatio' seem to be pretty clear;however, you have a point with "cunnilingus"(more of an equivalent rather than a perfect match)
Kim Metzger Mar 20, 2008:
Nine Google hits for "gave her a blow job" ought to tell you something. The term could be used tongue-in-cheek.
Ewa Nowicka (asker) Mar 20, 2008:
This is a bit confusing then: http://tinyurl.com/yvql2u

While I know the original meaning and I know it basically refers to men,
I have an impression that in slang it applies to both sexes.

I almost hope someone disagrees with you, guys! ;))

oral sex performed on a male (by either a male or a female)

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=blow job

Could you please elaborate on your question?

In that case, yes -- it is incorrect; this term only applies to males. The general term for performing oral sex on a female is 'to eat out.'
Note from asker:
My question is: Is it INCORRECT to use this expression to describe oral sex performed on a female. Thank you!
Peer comment(s):

agree Kim Metzger : The female version is referred to as cunnlingus. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cunnilingus

Not correct

I saw the Polish question you're referring to and read it with interest. In English, the use of the term "blow job" refers ONLY to men. Male recipients only. Men receive "blow jobs" from either men or women and the term is NEVER used for females. I hope that this helps to clearly answer your question.

Thank you. Another way to check the veracity is to use an example. IF I said "I gave *her* a blow job" ANY native English speaker (regardless of where they are from) would either look at me strangely OR laugh, outright, in my face. ONLY men receive "b.j."
agree Kim Metzger : Absolutely.
