German term

Randphänomen

Lis

Western/European fringe art

Peer comment(s):

agree Ken Cox : Yeah, the source text is a bit casual, but 'fringe' is a good choice here (whether art or the more literal 'phenomena').

neutral Andras Malatinszky : The "fringe art" part is fine, of course, but I wonder if "West" doesn't refer to the Western fringes of China instead of Europe.

marginal phenomena

"The discipline that considers marginal phenomena powerful sources of insight might itself be fruitfully examined through one of its own marginalized sub-fields –the anthropological study of art."

or perhaps
surrounding phenomena / border phenomena
Peer comment(s):

agree Stephen Reader : pending more context. (+ as an alternative, same meaning: peripheral)

phenomena at the western periphery...

might be a gentle allusion to China's western border regions...
as I said @ Z.E. Ball, 'pending context'. My speculative slant here is that "Rand-" c'd refer to the region rather than the issues/phenomena or the category of art/drama
Peer comment(s):

agree mill2 : definitely need more context/clarification from the client
