Now it does not seem to make sense to say that these returns must "be subjected to" a socially significant contribution because that doesn't fit the sentence or the word. And I am not satisfied with "receive" or other options for "faire l'objet." Can anybody help?

The subject of the contribution is the reason the contribution was made. Another way to think of it is that the results are the object of the verb "contribuyer".
| I realize that, but can you explain what this means? The sentence doesn't seem to make sense if "faire l'objet de" means "be the subject of." One would think that what is accomplished by these efforts MAKES a socially sig. contribution. |

I think you need to rephrase the sentence, using "contribution" as the subject.
A significant contribution must pertain to the returns on this...
Example:
La marchandise fait l'object de cette facture = This bill pertains to the merchandise.

It has something to do with a contribution pertaining to/involving/concering" these returns. etc. You need to turn the sentence around.
