As a native English speaker I have never heard the expression "of the seventh art" so I am leary to use it for an English audience.

the expression "séptimo arte" is more common in Spain than in English Speaking Countries:
I would go for a less literal translation such as a:
Buñuel became a "Movie maker of wonders", "Movie wondermaker"

agree Steven Capsuto : The question, though, is whether the Spanish term is more widely understood and less dated than the English term. I mean, *I* know it, but I used to work in media studies. In English it sounds very 1940s/1950s to me.

Correct and that's what we're talking about here so it sounds like you actually agree with Celia and me.

Just a slightly different wording of the excellent suggestions already offered. I think it would be nice to keep the word "art" in the translation.
