How to translate "оторва", i.e. a young sausy woman, probably, good-looking, rather promiscuous in sex matters, but not necessarily a prostitute. Something like "шалава", but with a milder tinge to it. Thanks to all.

After some research (http://lediotorva.boxmail.biz/ - one example), I've got a female that is aggressive about what she wants, expressive and independent.
My top choice so far is 'a kick-ass chick' -- a colloquial way to describe a female of aforementioned attributes. A 'hot-blooded' or 'hot-spirited' chick are also options.
'Righteous babe' is another. One of my favorite musicians is Ani Difranco (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ani_DiFranco), who seems to represent the Russian 'оторва' pretty well -- independent, open with her sexuality, lots of attitude, etc. As she became popular, she turned down all the musical labels that were trying to sign her, and established her own label, called "Righteous Babe" records. Her fans and other girls like her are sometimes referred to as such.

"Slut" is what my teenage daughter calls female classmates who put out. It's very pejorative.

: "Slut" has a negative connotation, while "оторва" - even contains a steak of admiration. Besides, "slut" is much more sexually loaded than "оторва"

You might be right, but if so everyone else has misunderstood, including native speakers of Russian. Words mean different things in different contexts...

Agree with MK above - but just wanted to emphasize this adjective qs an alternative to the noun. Sexually forward, open and unashamed without being sluttish.

Bitch is the best for "otorva" in my opinion: not too much, just perfect.
Slut is too strong, I would never recommend it. It would be easier to give an answer if u would place otorva in context. Sometimes Russian called wild girls (gilds doing boy`s things) "otorva". But the reason I translate it as a bitch is only that u also used the word "shalava" as a synonym:)
