I have just taken out a self-cert mortgage. To be approved for one of these mortgages, applicants don't need to have proof of income (payslips, audited accounts etc...) and can "self certify" i.e. simply tell the mortgage lender how much they earn. This website talks about "hipotecas de autocertificación" - http://mortgagedirectsl.com/tiposdehipoteca.asp - but that may be an overly literal translation. Most Spanish mortgage lenders seem to talk about "hipotecas para autónomos" (although self-cert mortgages can be taken out by anyone, self-employed or not).
