Dr. Jason Faulkner Aug 23, 2007:
There is no single instrument that can be used to examine the ears, nose and throat. The only thing I can think is that this is a diagnostics kit that has different heads. Search "fiber optic light source" or "light source handle." That's more likely.
Dr. Jason Faulkner Aug 23, 2007:
I'll just reiterate here, there is no such thing as a otorhinolaryngoscope. It only pulls 12 hits on Google, and all non-native sites. It sounds like a fiberoptic light source that you can attach different heads to.
Alvaro Aliaga Aug 22, 2007:
Yes, it's just one instrument, actually 3 in 1 BUT it is spelled otoRRinolaringoscopio.
dcanossa Aug 22, 2007:
richard, there are 127 hits on google for "otorrinolaringoscopio", which is the right spelling. it's obviously not a very popular instrument anyway, but it does exist.
R. Alex Jenkins Aug 22, 2007:
I agree with Jason here (even though I did actually answer and subsequently retract it) that the phrase 'otorinolaringoscopio' probably doesn't actually exist. There are only FOUR hits on Google for it in Spanish.
Dr. Jason Faulkner Aug 22, 2007:
Is this one instrument? A rhinoscope and a laryngoscope are commonly combined together (a rhinoscope is just a short laryngoscope), but an otoscope is a completely different device. Could this be a typo?

otoscope + rhino/nasoscope + laryngoscope set

I'm reasonably confident in this one as I used one of these sets (when I was a student I used to share a "pantoscopio" during the ENT classes). I guess you all know the root "pan" meaning "all" and -oscopio which is the equivalent for -scope). Just like Dr. Faulkner said this is basically a handle with interchangeable heads.

Please note that as the source text is explaining, this instrument is used to examine the eyes (even when the name doesn't give any hint about that), ears, nose and THROAT (not the laryngopharynx but the oropharynx) because this instrument has no blade (I'm referring to both the Macintosh and Miller blades).

As for your translation Angel, try this combination in your text, hopefully it'll work for you: otoscope/rhinoscope/laryngoscope set.

I tried to answer this earlier but I had troubles trying to remember the brand of our old "pantoscopio"... yes, it was Riester ®, so for those who crave for links, checks these below.

HTH.

Thank you, I think your answer says it all. In fact I asked the local doctors and they agree with you.

Thank you MLG.
agree Dr. Jason Faulkner : I like it! That's the most elegant solution. I used the Reister set in school, too (I think it's still in my closet somewhere). It wasn't very good at oto, opto, rhino, or laryngo, but it did them all. Score one for the Brain! SaludoZ!

Thank you very much Dr. Faulkner.
neutral liz askew : Hmmm, I am unconvinced./Fine.

Apparently the client and the local doctors are satisfied with this option and that's good news.
