French term
approches post-genomiques lourdes
French to English
Science
Biology (-tech,-chem,micro-)
Microbiology & (Post-)Genomics Technology
This term is from a research institute's evaluation report on one of their departments. The sentence is: "Les *approches post-génomiques lourdes* (double hybride, transcriptome, …) ont jusqu’ici été développées sur un très petit nombre de modèles microbiens, aucune équipe n’est associée à un programme de génomique structurale (caractérisation structurale systématique des produits d’un génome)."
"Lourd" is often translated as "heavy" when talking about equipment, but here we're talking about research techniques. I think it means that such techniques require major equipment, but...any ideas on how the experts might say it? Thanks!

Even though I am sort of guessing here, I don't think lourdes here means "heavy equipment". I don't think heavy equipment is needed for these things mentioned.

Comment: "Thanks to everyone - there were some other answers that I will be very tempted to use next time. Btw, "high-throughput" is usually how I translate "haut-débit", which is more specific than "sophisticated" or "advanced". Thanks again!"

ehavy investment in post genomic approaches
Heavy here is in the sense of 'heavy investment' IOW a lot of time/money/personal investment has been made on post-genome approaches

: Although I understand your explanation, your answer doesn't really fit with the sentence provided.

Could you explain why it wouldn't fit please ?

high-throughput post-genomic approaches
I might be tempted (as a molecular biologist) to step away from "lourd" and try to clarify it using the context of the whole paragraph. "High-throughput" refers both to "lourd" (because the methods involved are not only time-consuming and labor-intensive, but yield an enormous quantity of raw data) and to "caractérisation systématique du génome" (which appears later in the sentence).
I think "sophisticated" or "advanced" might work, but some of the meaning would be lost, especially considering the latter part that mentions structural genomics.

advanced post-genomic methodologies
Seems to me "lourd" means advanced in this context.
