Advanced Micro Devices Inc. today announced the first facet of a plan to extend its microprocessor instruction set in order to make it easier for software developers to exploit the power of multicore processors in new applications.　　
The new initiative, called {Hardware Extensions for Software Parallelism}, is an effort to help improve the integration of hardware and software, said Margaret Lewis, AMD's director of marketing for independent software vendors. She and other officials at the chip maker noted that converting single-threaded software to be multithreaded is a highly specialized skill and a challenge for developers.
