Feuerwehr entgegenarbeiten!

German to English Social Sciences Business/Commerce (general) fire protection
Hello again,

More from the fire safety in the workplace presentation. This is a bullet point from a slide about what to do if you discover a fire. It says simply: Feuerwehr entgegenarbeiten!

Does this mean "work towards the fire department" in some way, i.e. "head towards the door" (where the fire dept will be entering the building?

I'm confused!

Thanks a lot for any help in clarifying this!

Sag ich ja - ganz meine Rede - unterstützen!
Hilary Davies Shelby (asker) Aug 8, 2007:
Just received this info from the client: sie bei der Arbeit ggf. unterstützen (als Laie)
Craig Meulen Aug 6, 2007:
@Teresa: But what does 'work towards' mean?!! Think about it. Putting out a fire involves extinguishing the flames and trying to get to the core/source of the fire. If you 'work towards' them, you're going in the opposite direction - away from the fire ??
Teresa Reinhardt Aug 5, 2007:
UNLESS this is (badly) translated from another language, entegenarbeiten can really only mean "work towards" in this context; zuarbeiten would make more sense (support, help), but you guys are really making everything else up
Dr. Fred Thomson Aug 5, 2007:
"Entgegenarbeiten" means to oppose or work against. Clearly it is not intended that one work against the fire department here. Rather the fire department should work against or oppose the fire, i.e., fight it.
Hilary Davies Shelby (asker) Aug 5, 2007:
I should have said that i'm assuming that this relates to actually tackling the blaze, as it's next to a little graphic of a man with a fire extinguisher!

Some people prefer to post their answers in the AtA box. Whether this is because they consider themselves a cut above the 'rest of us guys' or they don't wish to subject their input to scrutiny is anyone's guess.

Have the fire department fight the blaze

In other words, let the experts handle it

Let the professionals handle it!

My understanding of this is not to try and be a hero, or work against the fire department. I think they want to say take care of yourself first, and try and stay out of the way.

help/support/prepare

agree BirgitBerlin : *Der* Feuerwehr entgegen arbeiten... if it shows a person with a fire extinguisher it will certainly mean "support" or "help" the fire services.//Genau! *Vor* dem Eintreffen!

danke. Ich bin davon überzeugt, dass damit eine Unterstützung VOR dem Eintreffen der Feuerwehr gemeint ist.

do as the authorities/emergency services tell you

Yes, the German seems a bit dogy. What I think they mean is to comply with what firemen etc. say.
