devil of a fix

English Tech/Engineering Poetry & Literature
All you did was plenty!” said Lane. “See that scratch?”
He pointed to his cheek. “Well, if it hadn’t been for your
forgetting to tie it up, I’d be in a devil of a fix!” And he
left the druggist gaping with surprise.

Thank you. Yes they are said to think alike; but there is another saying: "Fools seldom differ". Hope that doesn't apply here.

trouble

Well, if it hadn’t been for your
forgetting to tie it up, I’d be in a devil of a fix!

If you hadn't forgotten to tie it up, I'd be in real trouble / be in a lot of trouble / be in big trouble.

Or I'd really have a big problem.

Thanks, Jack (from one fool to another? Maybe in some cases there's a very fine line between a great mind and a fool?)
