I know, I know, it's a word which is always coming up and has often been discussed, but even after all these years it continues to give me problems which I'm hoping you can help me resolve definitively!
The context here is a report on the activities of a consortium responsible for reclamation and improvement of a wetland area and the "interventi" in question range from "costruzione di opere" through "ripristino delle sponde" to "ricalibrazione dei canali". Here are a couple of examples: "ha anche eseguito numerosi **interventi** di regolazione idraulica nella zona"; "studi per la messa a punto degli **interventi** e per la verifica dei loro effetti"; "**Interventi** di ingegneria naturalistica". What one generic term sounds convincing in a "technical" context? Thanks, and I'm sorry to bother you with what seems on the surface to be a banal question! Sarah

I hate it, would do never use it myself, but thousans of people use it and write it, so close your eyes, type it and think of the invoice, or you'll never finish.

You could vary it a bit with operations, work, took action, undertook action. intervened to. The work in question ranged from... The reader will be interested in understanding exactly what was done and won't notice the style too much, or even at all, as long as she/he understands easily, they have other things to do.

Note from asker:
Jim, thanks for giving me a good laugh! You have caught EXACTLY the spirit behind my question. I DO hate it, would NEVER use it, but frequently do, closing my eyes and thinking of the invoice :-). Just sort of hoped there might be an end to my torment in sight :-). |

Comment: "The best answer seems to be that there is no answer, at least no ONE answer, but all the answers are right :-). In the end, I'm choosing this option of Jim's because he's quite right... a whole load of people are writing "interventions" and if I worry about it too much, I'll never get done! Thanks to you all, Sarah. "

hai ragione - ogni volta che appare questo vocabolo c'è da tremare! Nel tuo caso mi sembra che si tratti di un'operazione, quindi operation, intervention, work, action ...

It works well in most of your examples, it is plain clear English and it carries the original meaning. Occasionally, such as in the second example, it is a bit stretched and it should
become either "works" (as suggested in another answer) or "designs", depending on the exact meaning that you can construe from the general context. It is not doctor's orders that you should always translate with the same word where this does not fit the source text.
