German term

Teilmünzen

German to English Social Sciences Economics coinage, numismatics
This comes from an Austro-Hungarian economics article from ca. 1908. I am trying to distinguish 'Scheidemünzen' from 'Teilmünzen', as both appear in the same sentence:

Die Silbergulden sind noch heute Kurantmünze gleich den früheren deutschen Talern, die 5 Kronen- und 1 Kronenstücke hingegen sind Scheidemünzen (das österreichische Gesetz nennt sie **Teilmünzen**) und ist im privaten Verkehr niemand gehalten, mehr als 250 Kronen in der ersten oder 50 Kronen in der zweiten Sorte in Zahlung zu nehmen.

Kurantmünzen are face-value coins, that is, the value of the coin equals the value of the metal in the coin.
Scheidemünzen and Teilmünzen are both non-face-value coins: like most modern coinage, the metal in the coin does not equal the value of the coin.
I have seen Scheidemünzen translated as secondary or token coins, but have found no way to distinguish Scheidemünzen from Teilmünzen in English.

From the text, this appears to be an Austrian term.

I would appreciate any and all suggestions.

Discussion

Rebecca Garber (asker) Jun 12, 2007:
I had seen that; however, it does fit the context (sorry, should have included more), which concerns the (non)redemptive nature of the Austro-Hungarian bank notes, the (non)conversion to a gold standard, and face-value vs non-face-vaule in coinage.
David Moore (X) Jun 12, 2007:
It looks as though "Teilmünze" may be "small change", as your "dime" and "quarter"; IOW, a smaller coin into which the basic currency unit is split. Dollars into cents, Pounds into pence, SFR into Rappen, and so on.

divisional coin

Teilmünze scheint nur ein anderer Name für Scheidemünze zu sein. Erläuterungen findest du in der angegebenen Website
'The pfennig had been the standard coin in Austria up to the schinderling era, but was simply a divisional coin after it had lost this function in 1460. With the Coinage Code of 1481, Frederick III officially proclaimed the Austrian gulden as the standard coin.'
