French term

drogue

French to English Medical Medical: Pharmaceuticals homeopathy
My doc is about producing and testing a homeopathic mother tincture from a species of tree by ethanol extraction. They continually refer to the fresh plant material (branches with leaves and flowers) as the "drogue". Does anyone know whether drug is an appropriate translation in this context? Raw material or source material would seem better to me, but why the use of "drogue" in French?

answer from client: I have since received the client's glossary, and they use the term "plant substance" for "drogue" in the context of the production of homeopathic drugs

drug

I believe "drug" is the appropriate term in this case, in both conventional "herbal" medicine and homeopathy. Please see how it is used in the definitions of the terms "decoction" and "liquid extract" in the glossary at the website below.
Example sentence:

Liquid extracts are prepared by percolating or macerating the comminuted drug with sufficient of the solvent best suited for the extraction of the drug constituents, this may be water or alcohol.

Decoctions are made by pouring cold water on to finely divided botanical drug and then allowing the mixture to simmer. Decoctions are not permanent preparations and should be prepared fresh daily.

Peer comment(s):

agree mdcdc : absolutely. When preparing and/or studying the safety of drugs (very general and appropriate term), we also use "test material"
