Me parece una buena opción, ya que "popular" denota "del pueblo" en este caso y cubre "folk". Claro que el problema es no repetir "popular" para decir que es de gran aceptación. En tu texto, para no quebrar el flujo, recomendaría "magia popular (de gran aceptación)" o "magia popular (que contaba con una gran aceptación)"
