German term

Menge / Speichermenge

German to English Tech/Engineering IT (Information Technology) Memory
Is this volume or capacity? Or simply merely referring to quantities?

Menge and Mengen is used throughout this set of documents, some of which are Word files, others are Excel (and therefore have little context). Examples of how it's being used:

Menge bereitgestellter Speicher.
Mengenreporting
Mengenarchivierung
Mengen Server
Kumulierte Mengen

Der monatliche Speicherpreis und die verrechnete Menge ermitteln sich aus dem Vergleich der verbrauchten Speichermenge mit der verbindlichen Bedarfsprognose je Leistungsschein und Speicherklasse

Maybe I'm confusing the two terms: Speichermenge and Menge, and one refers specifically to storage volume, and the other merely to numbers?

I'd appreciate some clear-thinking on this, please, as I'm tying myself up into knots on this one!

Discussion

Ken Cox Jan 19, 2007:
This appears to be related to site hosting and/or provision and utilisation of network data storage. You might find some useful terminology if you search for providers of these services. 'Storage' is probably better than 'memory' in this context.
Joanne Parker (asker) Jan 19, 2007:
In reply to DHPete... Nope! The information I've provided is taken from an Excel list, which is why I am equally confused. I agree it might be time to check with the client / point out the potential confusion with the terms.
Peter Barker Jan 19, 2007:
With the information you've provided it's difficult to say whether it's quantity (number of) or size (capacity). Are there units quoted which might give it away? Otherwise I would have thought it would be quite legitimate to ask the customer.
Aniello Scognamiglio (X) Jan 19, 2007:
Mengen Server=number
It really depends...

Selected

(store) size / memory size / storage medium size

Each of the examples has a slighly different translation:
Menge bereitgestellter Speicher. => Size of the available store
Mengenreporting => volume reporting (a.o.)
Mengenarchivierung => mass archiving
Mengen Server => ?? (unusual term - context required)
Kumulierte Mengen => cumulative quantities

could "verbrauchte Speichermenge" just be memory used?

Amount (of memory)

This can only be a guide, because "Menge" can also have the meanings you suggest, and it's really best to trust your own judgement as to which term sound better where.
