If the restoration was made only on the enamel, then you should say "1 surface". However, if it refers to the place on the tooth where it was made, it should be "1 face" (mesial, distal, lateral, posterior, etc.)

Thank you, Neil, but a tooth has faces, too: mesial, distal, lingual faces. See the note I've just added on this. You may speak of face (mesial, distal, etc.) and "surface" (enamel, dentine).
