Arabic term

Does it need an accent?

Not for points Arabic to English Other Linguistics
In an English text, does 'Meknès-Tafilalet' (moroccan region) need the accent grave?

Thanks very much!

concensus - yeah! That clears it up. I, incidentally, am American/Hungarian. Have a great evening, both of you!

Jennifer, I thought you wanted to know if you would put "liaccent grave" in French... Sorry for misunderstanding. As for English, I would definitely go for Meknas! PS/ Jennifer, I know Arabic because I am ALGERIAN ;-)
Jennifer Gal (asker) Jun 26, 2006:
Thanks Nesrin Internet search shows that the UN calls it either Meknas or Meknès, but Wikipedia calls is Meknes. But there are hardly any hits overall for Meknas. Concensus is lacking. I think I'll go w/ Meknas, bec. it's a UN-related doc. Thanks for your help!

Merci, ALG Vous connaissez l'arabe aussi? C'est formidable. :)
Nesrin Jun 26, 2006:
This is the established French spelling of the name (which has been adopted in the English text), hence the accent. The English spelling, I suppose, would be Meknas. The accent has nothing to do with the Arabic spelling.

Oui Jennifer, 'Meknès-Tafilalet avec accent grave :-)
