English term

Western Arrerent

English Other Anthropology Australian Aboriginals
I’m translating something about the Gosses Bluff meteor crater – see link: http://www.amonline.net.au/geoscience/earth/gosses.htm

I understand that the place is an important element of local creationist myths, but I’ve no idea how to refer to the Aboriginals:

“The site is very important to the Western Arrerent Aboriginal people, featuring in some of their Dreamtime stories”.

Specifically, what does “Wester Arrerent” mean? Any kind of help would be much appreciated : )

Arrernte

It looks like you have a typo. You'll get plenty of results with Arrernte.

ARRERNTE CULTURE
At contact there was no single, homogeneous Aboriginal society. Groups differed in aspects of their cultural and social organisation, and in the Northern Territory alone, over 100 different languages were spoken. These were separate languages, as unlike one another as French and Russian. Existence of widespread social networks meant that people had to be multilingual to communicate. The Arrernte group could speak up to 10 languages / dialects.

And another variation:

In fact, if the Arrarntic language speaking groups are anything to go by, it is doubtful that the clans even had a generic word for people'. In the Western Arrarnta dialect, the Arrarnta word relha is used now as a word for people collectively, i.e., men, women, children, youths, etcetera. But this usage of the word seems to have resulted from contact with Whites. I was alerted to this possibility when doing some translation work in another Arrarntic dialect.
