Bitumen is a category of organic liquids that are highly viscous, black, sticky and wholly soluble in carbon disulfide. Asphalt and tar are the most common forms of bitumen.

In British English, 'bitumen' is often used interchangeably with both 'asphalt' and 'tar'. In American English, 'bitumen' is most commonly used in engineering jargon to explicitly include both asphalt- and tar-based materials. In Australian English, 'bitumen' is used as the generic term for road surfaces.

Bitumen in the form of asphalt is obtained by fractional distillation of crude oil. Bitumen being the heaviest and being the fraction with the highest boiling point, it appears as the bottommost fraction.

Bitumen in the form of tar is obtained by the destructive distillation of organic matter, usually bituminous coal.

Bitumen is primarily used for paving roads. It is also the prime feed stock for petroleum production from tar sands currently under development in Alberta, Canada.

In the past, bitumen was used to waterproof boats, and even as a coating for buildings; it is possible, for example, that the city of Carthage was easily burnt down due to extensive use of bitumen in construction.

In Great Britain and continental Europe the geologic terms bitumen and asphaltic bitumen are employed only with reference to the black or brown petroleum-like substances that are called asphalts in the United States. In its various forms, bitumen is one of the most widely distributed of substances. It occurs, in varying quantities, in nearly every part of the world and throughout the whole range of geological strata. In current terminology bitumen also may include synthetic hydrocarbon compounds. The different forms of bitumen are listed in the table. Liquid petroleum, or crude oil, is a mixture of many kinds of hydrocarbon compounds that were formed by the gradual decomposition of organic matter. The solid or very dense, highly viscous bitumens, such as asphalts, probably have all been derived from liquid petroleum, either by evaporation of the lighter, more volatile fraction under atmospheric conditions or by metamorphism occurring deep within the Earth's crust.
The solid and very dense bitumens are fusible and soluble in carbon disulfide. They are related to but quite different from pyrobitumens, which are infusible and insoluble hydrocarbons that occur in oil shale, peat, and the various coals, including the subbituminous and bituminous forms, and also from the asphaltites, which probably formed from sapropelic coals. The pyrobitumens, however, produce or become bitumen-like compounds when they are heated. βιτουμένια: ονομασία που αποδίδεται σε όλους τους ορυκτούς υδρογονάνθρακες (ουσίες που αποτελούνται κυρίως από υδρογόνο και άνθρακα). Για τον περισσότερο κόσμο -κυρίως εξαιτίας της εμπορικής χρήσης των υδρογονανθράκων ως καυσίμων- η έννοια της λέξης περιορίζεται στους στερεούς και ημιστερεούς και παραλείπονται οι αέριοι… Η ονομασία βιτουμένια πρωτοχρησιμοποιήθηκε κατά τη Ρωμαϊκή εποχή και δόθηκε σε διάφορους ορυκτούς υδρογονάνθρακες. Αναφορές για τα βιτουμένια υπάρχουν ακόμη και από την κλασική και βιβλική εποχή.
Τα στερεά βιτουμένια είναι εύφλεκτα και ευδιάλυτα στον διθειούχο άνθρακα. Παρόμοιες με αυτά ουσίες είναι τα πυροβιτουμένια, τα οποία όμως είναι αδιάλυτα και δεν καίγονται, αλλά μετά από θέρμανση παράγουν βιτουμένια ή παίρνουν τη μορφή βιτουμενίων.
Τα βιτουμένια στις διάφορες μορφές τους αποτελούν μία από τις πιο διαδεδομένες ουσίες στον κόσμο. Απαντούν -μερικές φορές βέβαια σε μικρές ποσότητες- σχεδόν σε κάθε σημείο της Γης και σε όλα τα γεωλογικά στρώματα, από τα αρχαιότερα μέχρι τα νεώτερα.
Οι άσφαλτοι, οι ασφαλτίτες και τα ασφαλτικά πυροβιτουμένια -με εξαίρεση τους βιτουμενιούχους σχιστόλιθους- έχουν πιθανώς προέλθει από πετρέλαιο σε υγρή μορφή είτε με εξάτμιση των πιο ελαφρών και πτητικότερων κλασμάτων, στις ατμοσφαιρικές συνθήκες, ή από μεταμόρφωση σε κάποιο βάθος μέσα στον στερεό φλοιό της Γης. Με την απόσταξη του αργού πετρελαίου παίρνουμε ως ίζημα μια σειρά προϊόντων που είναι παρόμοια με τα ορυκτά στερεά βιτουμένια. Πολλά από τα βιτουμένια και τις ασφάλτους του εμπορίου παράγονται με αυτόν τον τρόπο.
