Creo que tiene origenes en el deporte: es una expresion argentina, y en Argentina la mayoria de las metaforas de uso cotidiano vienen del futbol. Salir con los tapones de punta literalmente seria la actitud de un jugador violento que sale dispuesto a lastimar a sus rivales, justamente, a estamparle los tapones de su calzado.
