Discussion

Non-ProZ.com Jan 30, 2006:
Tensaw River This action takes place on a river in Alabama. I question whether a "ship" could have made it that far upstream.
Non-ProZ.com Jan 30, 2006:
una lancha catalana Here is the full quote. Dos noches despus, el 17 de marzo, mientras descansaba, fue sorprendida por una lancha catalana de la flotilla de espaolas enviada en misin de reconocimiento al Tens. This takes place after Glvez took Mobile but before he took Pensacola from the British. I have to rule out "catalana" as a proper name.
Non-ProZ.com Jan 27, 2006:
lighter I am inclined to call it a "lighter", because the incident takes place on a river and is accompanied by "patrulleras".
Non-ProZ.com Jan 27, 2006:
"una" lancha catalana I thought about "Catalana" being the name, but the text in Spanish says "una lancha catalana", which rules out this possibility.

lighter "Catalana"

"Lancha" can be a lighter; "Catalana" could be the name gien to it.

In March 1781 when Galvez landed his troops on Santa Rosa Island it must have been an awesome sight. There were those great ships-of-the-line (the really big "Wooden Walls", Frigates, and a number of smaller recently captured vessels used as <<<lighters>>> to land provisions and troops onto the beach. Perhaps more than 40 ships! Some 1400 troops were landed onto Santa Rosa Island

Peer comment(s):

agree tazdog (X) : the only ref. to "lancha Catalana" has it as a proper name, and the date fits: http://members.tripod.com/erauscain/images/erausqui.htm (although I might just say "boat")
