Arabella K- Jan 15, 2006:
I think it's about the level of the surgery. The deeper they go, the higher is the risk for the pacients...so it's about the level of the intervention.
ocean2gulf Jan 15, 2006:
I get you point Dina, and I think it gives the meaning here.
Dina Abdo (asker) Jan 15, 2006:
how about ? we're talking about surgeries after all ... so what do you think of using: or as in the context above: ?
Dina Abdo (asker) Jan 15, 2006:
To: Ocean2Gulf The point here is about not having the patient cut in a surgery ... so it's less "invasive" I don't really think that would express the meaning here :)

I think here it is a new technique in operations that makes the it less invasive for the patient; i.e. If you check invasive on http://www.emro.who.int/umd/, I think the second sense is what is applicable here.

Up to the Seventies or Eighties of the last Century, the removal of a kidney stone required a 9" incision. Today, with the help of modern technology, the same operation would require a 1" inch incision only. The focus here is not only on the size of incision, but on the technology behind it. Therefore, we need to coin a new Arabic term emphasizing the importance of technology. We have terms like computer assisted translation, so why not "technology assisted surgery"?

My problem with all the suggested answers is that they are more like explanation rather than translation. It is clear that the intention is a procedure which involves minimal surgical intervention, but the writer opted to use "minimally invasive". I say we should respect the source and translate as is - of course without ruining the meaning. Note that a surgical procedure is considered "invasive" because it involves intrusion of the body's wholeness/boundaries. Therefore, تطفلي or متطفل is a good equivalent for "invasive". My suggested answer is almost as short as the source term and conveys exactly the same meaning.

A minimally invasive medical procedure is defined as one that is carried out by entering the body through the skin or through a body cavity or anatomical opening, but with the smallest damage possible to these structures.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minimally_invasive

For many surgical procedures, the method of choice has shifted from traditional open surgery to the use of less invasive means. These minimally invasive alternatives usually result in less pain, scarring and recovery time for the patient, as well as reduced health-care costs. This trend is predicted to continue, with estimates that as many as 70 percent of all high-volume surgeries performed in the United States will be done via laparoscopic techniques by the year 2000.
