Penatencreme

I'm going to make Labello into the generic lip balm, but is Penatencreme similar enough to Nivea to substitute that? It looks like it in pictures I've found on google...

Penatencreme is a trademark

and it is very similar to Nivea, the question arises whether one should not use something generic such as zinc cream commonly used for all sorts of ailments and dry skin at least in the UK

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "I think I'll go for zinc cream as I'm told this is what cricketers etc put on their lips. It needs to be something that stays white and doesn't sink in from info later in the text. Thanks everyone."

nappy cream

Penatencreme ist das Pendent zur nappy creme :-)
Peer comment(s):

neutral Edith Kelly : Well, nappy cream and Penatencreme are not the same, Penatencreme is also used for dry skin, for general rashes, for chipped hands etc.

true -but the original was used in baby and child care - see link :-)

moisturizing cream

Since you are going for the generic lip balm, why not go for the generic moisturizing cream?

Thanks!
agree Lisa Davey : Yes, moisturising cream and lip salve - avoids brand names which are culturally specific

Thank you!
disagree Barbara Wiegel : the original Penatencreme is not really a moisturizing but rather a healing cream (Nivea penetrates the skin quickly, Penaten stays on the surface and forms kind of a "protective layer"

Sudocrem

Peer comment(s):

agree Barbara Wiegel : if Sudocreme is what is smeared on the sore behinds of diaper-wearing babies in the UK, than that's what I'd go for...

That it's not just for babies, appears clearly from the special forum where people exchange tips on multiple uses

Vaseline

What about Vaseline? (British English)

I believe you need something colloquial, easily understood etc... Probably the equivalent all-purpose remedy that the average British girl would carry around in her bag and use for chapped lips, etc as an alternative to Labello would be (a dab of) Vaseline (Vaseline comes in in a small, pocket-size tin for this very purpose).

You would not immediately make a connection between Nivea and chapped lips. Nivea is perceived as more of a bodycream/facecream brand i.e. not something you would use for your lips.

By the way, why don't you keep Labello if this is for British English? It is perfectly OK.
Peer comment(s):

agree Anna Blackab (X) : indeed

agree Ilka Nahmmacher : I'd use this since Vaseline is equally familiar in the US, in the UK and probably in other English-speaking areas of the world, unlike Sudocream, which I suppose is uniquely British since I've never heard of it. Correct me if I'm wrong.

neutral hirselina : Vaseline is also known in Germany and Nivea is also used for lips
