German term

Teildisziplin

German to English Tech/Engineering Management
This term appears in an article that discusses various approaches to vehicle dynamics.

I think what is really being referred to here is "departments", I also considered "departmental approaches". Does anybody have any other ideas?

Many thanks for your help in advance

Discussion

Kenneth Beattie (asker) Nov 7, 2005:
thanks, more context: This is the only instance of "Teildisziplin" but the text also refers to "Teilbereiche" so these might be synonyms for the same thing. Here's some more context anyway:

Ken Cox Nov 7, 2005:
With Harry in the first instance (and the answer should be fairly obvious after that...).
Harry Borsje Nov 7, 2005:
guesswork, yes, but certainly Disziplinen will have to understood as Fachgebiete and not Abteilungen
Cilian O'Tuama Nov 7, 2005:
without context, this is pure guesswork
hirselina Nov 7, 2005:
More context is needed! Departments of ?

don't see why not take the straightforward path ...

You can still translate "Teilbereich" as subdivisions/departments/whatever, which obviously deal with different subdisciplines of vehicle dynamics

agree Kevin Lossner : Harry Borsje's comment is correct here, and "subdiscipline" is better than a term which may imply formal organization structures that do not exist in fact
