In Viet Nam, ordinary people sometimes use "phiên dịch" and "thông dịch" interchangeably and inaccurately. According to LAC VIET Dictionary:
- "phiên dịch" means to translate so translator means "phiên dịch viên"
- "thông dịch" means to translate orally or to interpret so interpreter means "thông dịch viên".
Besides, also according to LAC VIET Dictionary, "biên dịch" means to compile (used in informatics) a computer program.
Within my range of knowledge, these days, "biên dịch" is rarely used in linguistics related areas. In fact, it is only used in computer program areas
