Discussion

Natalie Wilcock (X) (asker) Sep 28, 2005:
Thanks Manuela. ;-))
Trans-Marie Sep 28, 2005:
I like your own idea, Natalie (violent offender register). It says it all without sounding like translatorese.
Tom Funke Sep 27, 2005:
'Hooliganism'-probably more common a term in UK than in US English-appears to be all too often associated with socccer games, though in Soviet-English translations it referred to almost anything that displeased the State. Put it in quotes. Tom
Natalie Wilcock (X) (asker) Sep 27, 2005:
Kenneth, I so totally agree. But I was told by our legal rep that that is the official name, obtained from somebody outside the company. I repeatedly asked whether this is a, as you rightly call it, homegrown translation, and was TOLD that it wasn't. Hmpf, what can you do? ;-))
Ken Cox Sep 27, 2005:
Hmmm -- is that an in-house (DIY) translation, or something they actually got from somewhere else? It sounds suspect to me (IMHO 'data file' is unnatural English in this context).
Natalie Wilcock (X) (asker) Sep 27, 2005:
Data File on Hooliganism Folks, sorry to interrupt your highly interesting discussion, but I have been TOLD that the official name for this file is Data File on Hooliganism. Although I googled it and found nothing, I was TOLD to use this official rendering. Hmpf. Sincerely wish they had come up with this earlier. Thanks so much for all your responses. I would have opted for something like Violent Offender Register - Sports in the end, I believe. Sorry, and thanks again to all that made the effort to respond and discuss. Regards, Natalie

German term (edited): Gewalttterdatei sport

sport(s) offenders

i believe this may fit
Note from asker:
Yes, these contain such offenders but that's not quite what I am looking for, Stephen. This is an official term in Germany, the equivalent of which I am sure must exist in the english-speaking world as well. But thanks nonetheless. Regards, Natalie

German term (edited): Gewalttterdatei sport

Data bank on violence at sports events

From the context I believe this is not about violence on the sprot field, but violent fans. In Switzerland (and all over Europe) it is a paroblem. And the the use of "sports" after the "Gewalttäterdatei" is part of the name to indicate that it is not just about violence, at sports events.

the last sentence should read "And the the use of "sports" after the "Gewalttäterdatei" is part of the name to indicate that it is not just about violence, *but violence* at sports events.

register/database/list of sports-related offenders

Violent Offender & Sex Offender Register

It may be illogical, Linda, but I would go for an expression that is used in the language rather than a literal translation.

You can see from Stephen's answer (and he is a native speaker) that he did not find it odd to say that. I'm sure he was aware that the issue here is not cricket players killing each other.

Also, it is a database (I would use register, I think) on the offenders, not the offences.
Peer comment(s):

neutral lindaellen (X) : I'm OK with register or list, but "sports-related" could also be 2 crochet players hitting each other. It's fans, not players and should be indicated.

Please see my comment above.
agree Kieran McCann : this would certainly include players where appropriate (names like Bowyer and Dyer come to mind); perhaps 'file' since this is specifically about legal proceedings, not just a general database

Yes, file is a good solution. I'm not happy with database myself.
