English to Korean: Translation of ‘Hearts and Hands’ General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Source text - English Hearts and Hands was originally published under his pseudonym, Sidney Porter, in 1902. The story is full of twists and wordplay, as was O.Henry's own life. He was sentenced to serve five years in federal prison for embezzlement of $854.08, after fleeing to Honduras, then returning to Austin to be with his sick wife, where he turned himself in. O. Henry was released shortly before this story was published, which makes its unexpected sources of compassion particularly poignant.
At Denver there was an influx of passengers into the coaches on the eastbound B. & M. Express. In one coach there sat a very pretty young woman dressed in elegant taste and surrounded by all the luxurious comforts of an experienced traveler. Among the newcomers were two young men, one of handsome presence with a bold, frank countenance and manner; the other a ruffled, glum-faced person, heavily built and roughly dressed. The two were handcuffed together.
As they passed down the aisle of the coach the only vacant seat offered was a reversed one facing the attractive young woman. Here the linked couple seated themselves. The young woman's glance fell upon them with a distant, swift disinterest; then with a lovely smile brightening her countenance and a tender pink tingeing her rounded cheeks, she held out a little gray-gloved hand. When she spoke her voice, full, sweet, and deliberate, proclaimed that its owner was accustomed to speak and be heard.
Translation - Korean ‘마음과 손’은 원래 오 헨리의 가명이었던 ‘시드니 포터(Sidney Porter)’라는 이름으로 1902년에 출간되었다. 이 이야기는 오 헨리가 겪어온 삶과 마찬가지로 반전과 말장난으로 가득 차 있다. 그는 온두라스로의 도피하였으나 아픈 아내와 함께하기 위해 어스틴으로 돌아와 자수했고, 854.08달러를 횡령한 혐의로 연방 교도소에 5년 형을 선고받았다. 오 헨리가 이 소설이 출간되기 전에 석방되었다는 사실은 특히나 독자들에게 예상하지 못했던 가슴 아픈 동정심을 선사하기도 한다.

가장 필요로 하는 역량은 책임감 갖고 서비스하는 주인의식과 커뮤니케이션이라는 것을 알게 되었습니다. 이러한 역량은 여러 경험을 통해 키워왔고 가장 기억에 남는 두 가지 사례가 있습니다. 첫 번째는 많은 응급상황을 대처해야 했던 경험입니다. 응급수혈의 경우 처방에 의해 미리 준비된 혈액이 아니기 때문에 직접 인편으로 혈액을 운반하는 방법 밖에 없어 제 담당 업무와 응급수혈의 업무를 동시에 해야 하는 상황이 자주 있었습니다. 이때 가장 필요한 것은 부서 내 팀워크가 가장 중요했고, 팀원들의 소통과 많은 응급상황대처가 부서 내 메뉴얼 내 불필요한 것과 필요한 것에 대해 우선순위를 정하고 유기적으로 변경하여 견고히 할 수 있었습니다.

Working in the hospital allowed me to have a better understanding of the laboratory workflow and master numerous laboratory duties. I was able to improve my fundamental testing skills and manage a variety of laboratory equipment while also doing quality control and managing reagents while working as a clinical pathologist. And these experiences might be one of the most beneficial aspects of working in for research department.

I realized that ownership mindset, responsibility and communication skills are the most vital abilities. I improved these abilities via a variety of experiences, and I have two vivid recollections of them. The first is that I had to deal with a lot of emergency situations. Since we cannot prescribe the blood in advance when an emergency blood transfusion is required, it must be delivered by person, therefore I frequently found myself in situations when I needed to perform both blood transfusion and my assigned work. At that every moment, I made a flexible decision on the priority of the emergency response procedure through communicating with my team members. And I grasped that the most crucial aspect of all undertakings was teamwork.
