German term

antriebssteigernde Wirkung

German to English Medical Medical: Pharmaceuticals antidepressants
This appears in a pharmacotherapy handbook:

"Klinisch bewährt hat sich auch die Kombination von Venlafaxin mit Mirtazapin, wie auch die STAR*D-Studie bestätigt. Hierbei wird die antriebssteigernde Wirkung von Venlafaxin mit der gleichzeitigen Förderung des Schlafes durch Mirtazapin vereint."

Discussion

uyuni Sep 16, 2015:
But "drive enhancing" is in use, too...;-)
David Tracey, PhD Sep 16, 2015:
uyuni's "activating" is certainly more commonly used in connection with antidepressants than "drive-enhancing".

activating effect/(properties)

In some patients, antidepressants can cause an *activating effect*. This means that a person who before was so depressed that they could hardly get out of bed now has more energy, but is still depressed and irritable.

This led to the belief that antidepressants may have an *activating effect* that allows patients to follow through on their suicidal impulses.

SSRIs may have an initial *activating effect* that can intensify some symptoms of anxiety.

Suicide attempt and externalizing behaviours in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD): Possible role of the *activating effect* of antidepressants.
http://www.researchgate.net/publication/263100066_Suicide_at...

There is a longstanding belief that antidepressants might have an early * activating effect* that gives depressed patients the energy to follow through on suicidal impulses before the mood improvement also provided by antidepressant treatment takes effect.

This letter discusses the possible role of the *activating effect* of antidepressants in suicide attempt and externalizing behaviours in posttraumatic stress disorder.

Bupropion may have an *activating effect*, which some patients may experience as agitation, insomnia, or both, and also may have an appetite suppressant effect.

synergistic effect

Venlafaxine and mirtazapine in combination are increasingly used in clinical practice to treat treatment-refractory depression. Putative efficacy for this combination of antidepressants, beyond that of monotherapy, stems from their synergistic actions.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18330778

Therefore it is thought that mirtazapine enhances noradrenaline
and serotonin
transmission by blockade of these receptors. And thus augmentation of
venlafaxine with mirtazapine is due to a synergistic effect on serotonergic
systems.

Peer comment(s):

disagree Steffen Walter : No, 'synergistic' means that the two drugs interact and enhance the desired effect(s) when taken in combination. Nothing to do with 'antriebssteigernd', I'm afraid.

drive-enhancing effect

"A moderate anxiolytic effect was found in the nomifensin group, whereas medication had to be discontinued in two desimipramine-treated patients because of its drive-enhancing effect."

"The results showed that moclobemide was as effective as maprotiline (HDRS, Zung SDS); moclobemide appeared to have the same antidepressant and anxiolytic activity, but a stronger drive-enhancing effect."
