Italian to English: La brigata delle cinque sorelle by Paola Peretti General field: Art/Literary Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Translation - English The tablecloth swayed, sweeping its way closer and then farther away with each step of my aunts, mom, and grandma. I played keep-away from the parchment. Other times, I’d try to guess whose feet had come into view. Usually, it was my mom and Grandma Bianca who moved around the most. I’d catch a glimpse of their shoes—my mom wore red high heels, my grandmother’s had black straps. They’d start on opposite sides of the table and work their way to the center—probably rolling out sheets of dough they’d prepped the night before. I used the light and air around me to help me imagine the scene. A drawer that opened and then slammed shut. The cold thud of the refrigerator door. The whiff of heat from the open oven door as the day’s first batch was brought out. Even if I couldn’t hear the noises, I could feel the dough slap onto the surface and then watch as strips of it hung down the sides of the tablecloth, its shadow coming through the paper walls.

Translation - English The rest of the table was vacant. A faint line of steam rose from the other eight neatly plated bowls before dissipating into the air; while the eight slices of bread remained, waiting patiently to be devoured. The man ate another mouthful of bread and sipped a few spoonfuls of coffee; while, she was far more contented by the smaller morsels. They ate, consumed by a sacred silence, one that neither of them dared to break. Their eyes were lost in thought, filled by images both distant and terrible.

Source text - Italian Ursula era venuta al mondo in una foresta dell'Africa centrale.
Translation - English It was in a forest in central Africa where Ursula was born. And it was there that, many years before; she had been kidnapped by scientists. She lived, for a brief period, in a laboratory before being sent into orbit on a rocket ship. Yet, rather than detonating with the rest of the rocket – as this was the plan – she escaped with the push of a button and parachuted back to Earth. After having traversed every strata of the atmosphere at supersonic velocities, she landed right in the center of the Magic Circle. And so it was that Ursula became its very first inhabitant. Given Ursula was the oldest, and given she’d lived the longest in the company of humans—and had journeyed into space as far as the stars themselves—she was considered the wisest of all creatures.

Source text - Italian EXT. NEW ORLEANS - GIORNO

Mardi Gras, 1883 - Colorful floats parade in the streets engulfed in the clamor of the crowd. In all its majesty, the royal float carrying the carnival king and queen, advances slowly amidst showers of sparks, flowers, frenetic music, and cheers. Cora Slocomb, Queen of the Carnival, sits on her throne next to the king. She wears a crown adorned by a thousand colored stones. Cora is radiant; her eyes brim with excitement. In the honorary grandstand, sits her MOTHER: “Her father would have been so proud to see his Cora, Queen of New Orleans...”

Translation - English Bryce Canyon is a small national park in southwestern Utah, established in 1924 and named after Mormon Pioneer, Ebenezer Bryce. The landscape is nothing short of breathtaking: spiral rock sculpted by heavy winds; hollows carved out by erosional forces and shaded by tones of red, orange, and violet; pinnacles and spires infused together creating the bizarre formation known as the "Hoodoo".
