Source text - English Some of the main consequences of the e-health development are a greater interaction between citizens and health, alongside the improvement of the access to information. This reality has become relevant for the medical information promulgation, which originated virtual social networks linked to health, Additionally, a Web 2.0, better known as Social Web or Social Networking, allowed users, at a simple click, generate and publish contents, share ideas, form opinions and promote dialogues.
This study’s purpose is to investigate the sources and motives that led to the emergence of virtual communities of patients and to analyse to what extent these communities can contribute in a positive or negative way to peoples’ health. Some of Web 2.0 main tools will be presented for a better comprehension of the mechanism of these cyberspace/ virtual communities that provide the so-called mass collaboration. Finally, a description of the Portuguese reality and a qualitative research will be carried out based on Associations of Representatives of Specific Pathologies, a Virtual Portuguese Community of Patients and a Private Hospital, which aim is to identify their perceptions towards the virtual communities.
Translation - Portuguese As principais consequências do desenvolvimento do “e-health” traduzem-se numa maior participação do cidadão na área da saúde, bem como numa melhoria do seu acesso à informação. Esta realidade tornou-se relevante para a disseminação da informação médica e originou a criação de redes sociais virtuais, ligadas à saúde. Adicionalmente, a Web 2.0, mais conhecida por “Social Web ou Social Networking”, veio permitir aos seus utilizadores que, a partir de um simples clique, gerassem e publicassem conteúdos, partilhassem ideias, formassem opiniões e promovessem o diálogo.
Com o presente estudo pretende-se investigar a origem e os motivos do aparecimento das comunidades virtuais de doentes e analisar em que medida estas comunidades podem contribuir de modo positivo ou negativo para a saúde das pessoas. Apresentar-se-ão, para uma melhor compreensão do funcionamento destas comunidades no ciberespaço, algumas das principais ferramentas da Web 2.0 que proporcionam a “denominada” colaboração em massa. Por fim, realizar-se-á uma descrição da realidade portuguesa e uma pesquisa qualitativa, junto de Associações de Representantes de Patologias Especificas, uma Comunidade Virtual Portuguesa de Doentes e um Hospital Privado, com o objectivo de identificar as suas percepções sobre estas comunidades virtuais.
