Source text - English Trade has traditionally been a concern of diplomacy. Trade interests and trade policies are generally part of the central preoccupations of most states. Ideally, trade policy and foreign policy should support each other, in the same way that defence and foreign policy have a mutually supportive relationship. Yet trade policy, rather more than defence, has tended to pull in divergent directions from foreign policy, unless, as is sometimes the case, economic issues dominate external policy. As a result, an additional task for diplomacy is dealing with external problems arising from the consequences of differing lines of external policy. Divergence between trade and foreign policy can sometimes arise from the practice of having separate diplomatic and trade missions, reflecting the tendency to treat the political and economic aspects of foreign policy separately. Trade and foreign policy may also diverge because of demands made by established trade interests within states.

Apart from the questions of divergence and primacy, trade policy may become a direct instrument of foreign policy. In this sense, trade is used to support or further objectives that are not exclusively economic but political or military. The political uses of trade involve diplomacy in initiatives to develop goodwill, promote regional cooperation, gain political influence or strategic assets (e.g. bases) within another state, through to coercive sanctions and other forms of punitive behaviour (see Table 9.1).

Gli interessi e le politiche commerciali sono spesso nevralgici per la maggior parte degli Stati. Idealmente, la politica commerciale e quella estera dovrebbero supportarsi a vicenda, così come quest’ultima ha una relazione di mutuo supporto con la Difesa . Tuttavia, la tendenza della politica commerciale – ancor più che della Difesa – è stata imboccare strade diverse dalla politica estera, salvo nel caso in cui questa sia sottoposta a questioni di carattere economico (come avviene alle volte). Il che si traduce nel compito extra della diplomazia di affrontare le problematiche esterne che si manifestano come conseguenza delle linee discordanti della politica estera. Divergenze tra politica estera ed economica posso insorgere, a volte, qualora si tengano separate le missioni diplomatiche da quelle commerciali: ciò riflette la tendenza a trattare separatamente gli aspetti politici ed economici della politica estera, la quale può divergere da quella commerciale anche per via delle richieste dettate dagli Stati in relazione a interessi commerciali interni consolidati.

Lasciando da parte le questioni di divergenza e supremazia, la politica commerciale può diventare uno strumento diretto della politica estera. In questo senso, il commercio è usato per sovvenzionare o raggiungere obiettivi non esclusivamente economici, ma politici e militari. I risvolti politici del commercio coinvolgono la diplomazia in iniziative atte a suscitare buona volontà/reazioni positive, promuovere la cooperazione regionale, accrescere l’influenza politica o le risorse strategiche (e.g. basi) in un altro Stato, attraverso misure coercitive o ulteriori forme punitive (vedere tabella 9.1).

Source text - English I grew up in Pittsburgh. Our neighborhood was built in the early 1900s by immigrants who came over to work in the steel factories. The houses are nice, in my opinion; beautiful brick homes that were built to last. But they weren’t kept up, so now you don’t see nice lawns, and you see very few parks. If you do see a park, there are prostitutes or drug dealers there. You see graffiti too, lots of liquor stores, and a lot of abandoned homes. On some blocks there’s only one home on the block left, and it’s barely standing up.
Most of the girls in my middle school didn’t make it to high school, especially the Hispanic girls. If you were to drive down the street you would see boys—Hispanic, white, and black—dressed in clothes that represented their gangs. They all had territories in the community, and a lot of them were into drug dealing and violence. You would see groups of girls walking down the street, maybe twelve, thirteen, fourteen years old, who’d shaved their eyebrows off and painted them on with liquid eyeliner. Their hair was all curled and they wore tight tube-tops over big pregnant bellies. Us girls got pregnant young, and we lived on welfare. You didn’t see anybody around there working or going to school.
I also hung out on the street with a group of girls in the neighborhood, but we didn’t wear tube-tops and curled hair. We thought we were different, and we didn’t wanna end up pregnant. Even so, we didn’t talk about college, or even graduating from high school. Those things weren’t a part of our world at all.

Le case secondo me sono carine; belle case in mattoni fatte per restare in piedi. Ma non sono state tenute bene, per cui ora in giro non vedete giardini curati, e di parchi ce ne sono ben pochi. Se troverete davvero un parco, sarà popolato di prostitute e spacciatori. Si vedono anche graffiti, molti negozi di alcolici e un sacco di case abbandonate. In alcuni isolati resta solo una casa, e sta su a malapena.
La maggior parte delle ragazze della mia scuola media non arrivavano alle superiori, specialmente quelle di origine ispanica. Se aveste guidato un po’ in giro avreste visto ragazzi – ispanici, bianchi e neri – vestiti con indumenti simbolo delle loro gang. Tutti avevano il loro territorio nel quartiere, e moltissimi erano coinvolti in spaccio di droga e violenze. C’erano anche ragazze di dodici, tredici, forse quattordici anni che camminavano per la strada a gruppi, con le sopracciglia depilate e tinte con eyeliner liquido. Si facevano tutte i ricci e indossavano top attillatissimi sopra a un grande pancione. Da noi le ragazze rimanevano incinte presto e vivevano di sussidi pubblici. Nessuno lì intorno lavorava o andava a scuola.
Anche io giravo per la strada con un gruppo di ragazze del vicinato, ma noi non indossavamo top attillati e non ci arricciavamo i capelli. Noi pensavamo di essere diverse, e non volevamo finire incinte. Comunque non parlavamo di diplomarci, figuriamoci poi dell’università. Quelle cose non facevano proprio parte del nostro mondo.

Source text - Italian Cosa fanno le 1632 imprese italiane che crescono e assumono?
Piccole. A volte piccolissime. Molto in gamba. Dentro le 17mila aziende manifatturiere attive nei distretti, 1.632 sono decollate negli ultimi 7 anni. L’ufficio studi di banca Intesa Sanpaolo le monitora dal 2012 ed emerge che abbiamo 588 “eccellenze” nel settore metalmeccanico, 403 nella moda, 226 nell'agroalimentare, 167 nelle materie plastiche, 163 nei mobili a arredamento, 85 in altri settori. Domanda: cosa hanno fatto queste imprese per crescere costantemente più della media?
Innovazione del prodotto
L’azienda familiare Caffè Borbone, fondata da Massimo Renda, nel 2011 si mette in gioco: abbandona la gestione delle macchinette da ristorazione aziendali e si butta nel business del caffè monodose (cialde e capsule). Poi brevetta le capsule compatibili con le macchinette dei grandi marchi e oggi è leader italiano nelle cialde, dove ha ottenuto anche la certificazione per quelle interamente compostabili. In un mercato che cresce del 15% l’anno il gruppo di Caivano (Napoli) arriva al 30%. In sette anni il fatturato è passato da 19 milioni a 130, con un margine lordo del 26%, mentre i dipendenti sono saliti da 10 a 160.
Renda ha da poco ceduto il 60% a Italmobiliare della famiglia Pesenti. Un socio forte con cui potenziare l’azienda e sviluppare altri progetti.
I parametri per scovare i migliori
Quali sono stati i criteri utilizzati per individuare i migliori? Stefania Trenti, che ha curato il monitoraggio per Intesa Sanpaolo spiega: «Oltre ai leader storici del Made in Italy, c’è un gruppo di potenziali trascinatori che emerge dai distretti, le regioni produttive del Paese dove si afferma la specializzazione di un certo tipo di attività, e una connessione virtuosa tra le aziende che fanno rete sul territorio». Lo studio ha preso in considerazione le aziende con un fatturato di almeno 400 mila euro e le ha osservate nel tempo. Gli ultras della crescita rappresentano il 9% delle società «distrettuali». Nel periodo considerato hanno avuto un aumento del fatturato superiore al 15% e hanno assunto personale. Il margine lordo è migliorato almeno del 5-8%. Pochi i debiti e se ci sono vengono compensati da attivi robusti. Gli altri criteri di scelta sono qualitativi, a partire dai brevetti: 103 ogni 100 imprese, mentre in media 100 aziende non eccellenti ne hanno appena 38. Il 53% dei campioni vende all'estero contro il 33% della media nazionale. In sostanza chi ha avuto il coraggio di ammodernarsi è stato premiato dai risultati.
Il confronto con la Germania
L’Italia che ce la fa è in grado persino di battere la Germania se si confrontano la propensione all’export e la vocazione manifatturiera dei distretti di Vicenza o Reggio Emilia con quella del Baden-Wurttenberg, uno dei lander più ricchi.
La varietà del Made in Italy venduto nel mondo è impressionante mentre il confronto della produttività nazionale dal 1995 ad oggi con quello tedesco è impietoso: il nostro Pil è cresciuto solo dello 0,4% medio annuo, quello tedesco ha marciato dell’1,6%. In altre parole: le nostre aziende migliori non hanno rivali, le altre arrancano.

Product innovation
Caffè Borbone is a family-owned business founded by Massimo Renda and in 2011 it got in on the game leaving the management of coffee machines for corporate catering and venturing into the business of single-dose coffee machines (coffee pods and capsules). Later on the company patented capsules compatible with the major-brand coffee machines and nowadays it leads coffee pod production in Italy, as well as obtaining certification for fully biodegradable models. In a market that is growing by 15% per year, the Neapolitan group from Caivano tops 30%. The turnover has increased from 19 to 130M in 7 years, with a 26% gross revenue, while employees have increased from 10 to 160. The founder has recently sold a 60% stake of the company to Italmobiliare, owned by the Presenti family. It’s a strong partner to enhance the company’s business and develop other projects with.
Scouting of excellence: criteria
What are the criteria used to identify top businesses? Here’s the explanation of Stefania Trenti, who oversaw the monitoring for Intesa Sanpaolo: «Besides the glorious leaders of the “Made in Italy” brand, a group of potential leaders stands out from the industrial districts, which are productive areas characterised by high specialisation and a virtues circles of connections between businesses creating a local network». The study took in consideration businesses whose turnover was at least 400’000€ and monitored them over time. 9% of the businesses with the highest growth rate operated in industrial districts. Their turnover has seen a 15% increase in the time span considered and they have hired more staff. The gross profit has increased by 5-8%. The considerable revenues make up for the very few debts. The other criteria were qualitative, starting with the 103 patents scored by the 100 firms, while the average figure for non-leading companies stood at just 38. 53% of the sample businesses sells to foreign countries, while the national average is 33%. To wrap up those who were brave enough to invest on R&D were rewarded.
A comparison with Germany
The excellence of Italy manages to successfully outperform even Germany when it comes to comparing the export trend and the manufacturing output of Vicenza and Reggio Emilia industrial districts with those of the wealthy Baden-Württemberg region.
An astonishing array of “Made in Italy” products is sold around the globe; however, the comparison with Germany in terms of national productivity since 1995 is harsh: the GDP has seen an annual average increase of a paltry 0.4%, in comparison to the solid 1.6% of Germany. In other words, while our best firms are second to none, the others struggle to compete.

M.C. Limited, a Company incorporated under the Laws of England and Wales, with its registered office at x, London, United Kingdom, N12 0DR (hereinafter referred to as “the Contractor”)
For the purposes of the present Agreement, “the parties” shall mean the Principal and the Contractor when mentioned jointly.
WHEREAS:-
The Principal acts in the events industry (hereinafter referred to as “the Principal’s Business”).
The Contractor acts in the events sectors and in particular in the niche designated to classic and vintage cars.
The Principal wishes to appoint the Contractor on a non-exclusive basis to carry out activities related to the Principal’s Business.
NOW, THEREFORE, it is hereby agreed between the parties as follows:-
1. SCOPE
1.1 This Agreement sets the terms and conditions under which the Contractor shall, upon instructions of the Principal, carry out any of the activities and services that can be provided by the Contractor in the Territory, as defined hereinafter (in Clause 2.1 “the Territory”).
2. TERRITORY

8. RESERVATION OF RIGHTS
8.1 All duties and rights arising from the present Agreement shall not be transferred or assigned to third parties, unless prior written consent has been given thereto by the Principal.
9. INDEMNIFICATION
9.1 The Principal shall indemnify the Contractor fully and effectively against any liabilities, costs, expenses, damages or claims which the Contractor will incur in carrying out in good faith and with care and due diligence the Principal’s Business on behalf of the Principal, with the exception of gross negligence and wilful misconduct of the Contractor.
10. ARBITRATION
10.1 This Agreement shall be governed, construed, interpreted and enforced in accordance with the Laws of England and Wales.
10.2 Should, at any time, a difference of opinion arise in relation to this Agreement, and the obligations hereunder, the parties shall first endeavour to solve such difference in an amicable manner.
11. WARRANTIES
Each of the parties hereby represents and warrants to the other that:
a) it is a legally existing entity with the authority to enter into this Agreement
b) it has complied and will comply fully with all applicable laws, regulations, statutes and ordinances…

7.1 In considerazione dei servizi resi dal Contraente ai sensi del presente Contratto ("il Compenso"), il Committente verserà al Contraente un compenso da concordare di volta in volta.
8. RISERVA DI DIRITTI
8.1 Tutti gli obblighi e i diritti derivanti dal presente Contratto non possono essere trasferiti o ceduti a terzi, a meno di previo consenso scritto da parte del Committente.
9. INDENNIZZO
Il Committente risarcirà e terrà indenne il Committente dalle responsabilità, le perdite, le spese, i danni o le richieste di risarcimento che il Contraente sosterrà espletando in buona fede e con cura e dovuta diligenza l’Attività del Committente per conto del Committente, ad eccezione dei casi di colpa grave e dolo commessi dal Contraente.
10. ARBITRATO
10.1 Il presente Contratto è disciplinato, letto, interpretato e applicato conformemente alle leggi in vigore in Inghilterra e Galles.
10.2 Qualora dovesse sorgere, in qualsiasi momento, una divergenza di opinioni in relazione al presente Contratto e agli obblighi da esso derivanti, le parti cercheranno innanzitutto di risolvere tale divergenza in via amichevole.
11. GARANZIE
Con il presente, ciascuna delle parti rappresenta e garantisce alla controparte quanto segue:
a) di essere un'entità legalmente costituita e con l'autorità di stipulare il presente Contratto
b) di aver rispettato e di rispettare in futuro pienamente qualsivoglia legge, regolamento, statuto e ordinanza applicabile...

Source text - English Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) in the United Arab Emirates
The first MERS-CoV case in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was reported in July 2013. Since then, UAE has reported 91 cases of MERS-CoV and 12 associated deaths.
Public health response
Upon identification of a case, a case investigation is initiated. The investigation includes screening of all close contacts, including occupational contacts, household contacts and healthcare workers at the health care facilities. All close contacts are tested for MERS-CoV, then are monitored on a daily basis for the appearance of respiratory or gastrointestinal symptoms for 14 days after the last exposure to the confirmed cases.
Infection with MERS-CoV can cause severe disease resulting in high mortality. Humans are infected with MERS-CoV from direct or indirect contact with dromedary camels. MERS-CoV has demonstrated limited ability to transmit between humans. So far, the observed human-to-human transmission has occurred mainly in health care settings.
WHO expects that additional cases of MERS-CoV infection will be reported from the Middle East, and that cases will continue to be exported to other countries by individuals who might acquire the infection after exposure to dromedary camels, animal products (for example, consumption of camel’s raw milk), or humans (for example, in a health care setting).
WHO continues to monitor the epidemiological situation and conducts risk assessment based on the latest available information. Infection prevention and control measures are critical to prevent the possible spread of MERS-CoV in health care facilities. Therefore, healthcare workers should always apply standard precautions consistently with all patients, regardless of their diagnosis.

L’infezione da MERS-CoV può provocare una malattia grave con elevata mortalità. Le persone vengono infettate da MERS-CoV tramite contatto diretto o indiretto con i dromedari. È stata dimostrata una limitata capacità di trasmissione interumana di MERS-CoV. Finora, i casi osservati di trasmissione da persona a persona si sono verificati principalmente in ambiente sanitario.
L’OMS prevede la notifica di ulteriori casi di infezione da MERS-CoV in Medio Oriente, e la diffusione di casi in altri paesi ad opera di individui che potrebbero essere infettati a seguito del contatto con dromedari o prodotti di origine animale (per esempio, il consumo di latte crudo di dromedario), o di contatto umano (ad esempio, in una struttura sanitaria).
L’OMS continua a monitorare la situazione epidemiologica e a condurre la valutazione del rischio in base alle più recenti informazioni disponibili. Le misure di prevenzione e controllo delle infezioni sono fondamentali per prevenire il diffondersi di MERS-CoV nelle strutture sanitarie. Pertanto, gli operatori sanitari dovrebbero sempre attuare delle misure precauzionali standard con tutti i pazienti, indifferentemente dalla loro diagnosi.

I conti e i rischi
Finiti i festeggiamenti, partono i conteggi. Quanto vale un'Olimpiade? E in particolare i giochi olimpici di Milano-Cortina 2026? Sul tema esistono infinite scuole di pensiero e calcoli innumerevoli (perché in tema di Olimpiadi la matematica può essere un’opinione). Robert A. Bale e Victor A. Madeson, autori di un accuratissimo studio sul tema (Going for the Gold, the Economics of the Olympics, apparso sul Journal of economic perspective nella primavera 2016) sostengono che i cinque cerchi siano sempre causa di disastri economici. I due economisti indicano uno sforamento medio è del 179% rispetto ai costi iniziali con l’unica eccezione (tra giochi estivi e invernali): quella di Barcellona 1992.

Però ci sono anche i calcoli che autorizzano ottimismo intorno alle Olimpiadi: Università Bocconi e Ca' Foscari di Venezia hanno stimato ricadute sul territorio pari a 4,5 miliardi di euro (2,8 per la Lombardia e 1,5 per Veneto e Trentino) e 36 mila posti di lavoro tra occupazione diretta e indiretta. Ma è l’Università La Sapienza di Roma ad aver realizzato un approfondito studio sull'analisi di impatto economico-finanziario (commissionato lo scorso inverno dal governo) da cui emerge che «i Giochi invernali contribuiranno positivamente alla crescita dell’economia: gli incrementi del Pil tra il 2020 e il 2028 vanno da 93 a 81 milioni di euro annui. La crescita cumulata del prodotto raggiunge un massimo di circa 2,3 mld nel 2028. Lo studio ha verificato che le uscite dell’Amministrazione Centrale per finanziare i Giochi 2026 sarebbero compensate dagli introiti diretti e indiretti connessi alle attività sviluppate attorno ai Giochi nel periodo 2020/2028.
Investimenti e ritorni
Gli investimenti previsti sono pari a circa 346 milioni per la realizzazione dei villaggi olimpici e dei media center, nonché per gli interventi specifici su impianti sportivi esistenti e la realizzazione di nuovi impianti. I costi di gestione previsti per la realizzazione dell’evento sono pari a 1.170 milioni. Il costo contabilizzato per le Olimpiadi invernali organizzate a Torino nel 2006 era stato di 1.229 milioni. Ai costi di gestione vanno sommati 415 milioni a carico dell’amministrazione centrale, di cui 402 milioni per le spese in materia di sicurezza.
Pil e Occupazione
Già a partire dal prossimo anno, secondo lo studio della Sapienza, si registreranno aumenti significativi del prodotto e dell’occupazione. Il picco in termini di Pil si toccherà nel biennio 2025-2026, con un aumento medio pari a 350 milioni annuali. Al 2028, il Pil cumulato aggiuntivo prodotto dall'evento risulta pari a circa 2.300 milioni di euro. Rispetto al tendenziale, l'organizzazione delle Olimpiadi produce un aumento medio di circa 5.500 unità di lavoro, con un picco nel 2026 pari ad oltre 8.500 unità.

Costs and risks
Once the celebrations are over, it’s time to work out the costs / expenses. How much do the Olympics cost? And, specifically, how much will the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympic Games be? The matter arises a number of different ideas and endless calculations - when talking about the Olympics, numbers do indeed lie. Robert A. Bale e Victor A. Madeson carried out a meticulous study on the issue (Going for the Gold - the Economics of the Olympics, published in the Journal of Economic Perspective, spring 2016) in which they argue that the Olympic Games are invariably the cause of economic disasters. The two economists point out that the costs exceed the initial budget by 179% on average, being Barcelona 1992 the only exception to the rule in both the summer and the winter Games.
Let’s think optimistically
Nonetheless, some calculations concerning the Olympics show there’s also room for optimism: Bocconi (Milan) and Ca’ Foscari (Venice) universities have predicted a 4,5 billion local windfall (2,8 for Lombardy and 1,5 for Veneto and Trentino) and 36 thousand new direct or indirect hiring. However, the most optimistic figures come from an in-depth analysis on the economic and financial impacts carried out by the University of La Sapienza (Rome) upon the Government’s request last winter, which states that “the Winter Games will have a positive knock-on effect on the economy: GDP will increase from between €81 to€93 million per year in the period 2020-2028, with cumulative GDP growth reaching a peak of 2,3 bn in 2028. The study has verified that the revenues generated directly and indirectly by games-related business in the period 2020-2028 would offset the central government expenditures to finance the Olympics.
Investment and returns
Investments are forecast to total around 346 million euros will serve to build the Olympic villages and media centres, for the refurbishment of existing sport infrastructures and build new ones. Running costs for the implementation of the event are envisaged to amount to 1.170 M. The accounted spending for the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin had been 1.229 million euros. Running costs have to be added to 415 M stemming from central administration, of which 402 M will be allocated to security.
GDP and Employment
According to the study carried out by La Sapienza, we will a see a noticeable increase in GDP and employment rate as early as next year. The GDP will top in the two-year period 2025-2026 with an annual average increase of 350 M. In 2028, the additional cumulative GDP in 2028 originated from the event will be in the region of 2.300 million euros. In comparison to the trends, hosting the Olympics will produce an average increase of 5.500 jobs peaking in 2026 at 8.500 new employment opportunities.

I am an Italian MA Student in Ca' Foscari University in Venice, where I attend the course "Language, Markets and Institutions of MENA countries", together with subjects such as Business and Social Media Marketing in order to gain a deeper insight in the economic field.
My English level is a CAE assessed C1 at grade A, and I am very proud of this result, as I try to improve my oral and written skills in every language I know. As a matter of fact, after three years studying Arabic, I am happy to be able to communicate effectively with native people, as I have done during my Erasmus experience of last year in Tunis.
