Source text - English Once there was a city where everyone had the gift of song. Garnders sang as they clipped their flowers. Husbands and wives sang each other to sleep at night. Groups of children waiting for the school bell to ring raced through their verses of the lastest pop songs to get to the pure spun sugar of the choruses. Old friends who had not seen each other in many years met at wakes and retirement parties to sing the melodies they remembered from the days when they believed there was nothing in the world that would ever grip their spirits so and take them out of their bodies. Life was carried along on a thousand little currents of music, and it was not unusual to hear a tune drifiting out from behind the closed door of an office as you passed, or even from the small back room of the art museum, which was almost but never quite empty.
In this city lived a mute, the only person who was unable to lend his voice to the great chorus of song that filled the air. The mute had spent his entire life in the city, and everyone from the members of the school board to the stock boys at the grocery store knew who he was. In some communities there is a man who sells whistles by the courthouse or paper kites down by the river. In others there is a woman who decorates her home with multicoloured lights and streamers every holiday. Usually these people are no more than small figures at the periphery of everyone's attention, but when they die, it can be more surprising than the death of a prominent leader, because no one ever regarded them carefully enough to consider what their absence means.
Translation - German Einmal gab es eine Stadt, wo alle die Gabe zum Singen hatten. Gärtner sangen, wenn sie ihre Blümen nachschnitten. Mann und Frau sangen einander abends in den Schlaf. Gruppen von Kinder, die auf der Schulklingel warteten, hetzten durch die Strophe der neuesten Popliede, um den pür gesponnenen Zücker des Refrains zu erreichen. Alte Freunde, die sich seit Jahren nicht gesehen hatten, trafen sich bei Totenwachen und Pensionierungfeiern, um die Melodien zu singen, die sie an den Tagen erinnerten, als sie noch daran glaubten, dass es nichts auf der Welt gab, das ihren Geist so ergreifen konnten und sie zum körperlosen Schwebezustand bringen konnten. Das Leben wurde auf tausend kleinen Musikströmungen getragen und es war nicht ungewöhnlich, ein Lied zu hören, das hinter einer gechlossenen Bürotür herausschwebte, wenn man vorbei ging, oder sogar von dem kleinen Hinterzimmer des Kunstmuseums, das fast, aber niemals ganz, leer war.
In dieser Stadt lebte einen Stummer, der einzige Mensch, der unfähig war, seine Stimme dem großartigen Chor von Lieder zu verleihen, der die Luft erfüllte. Der Stumme hat sein ganzes Leben in der Stadt verbracht und jeder, von den Mitglieder der Schulbehörde bis zu dem Regalfüller vom Lebensmittelgeschäft, kannte ihn. In manchen Gemeinschaften gibt es einen Mann, der Pfeifen vor dem Gerichtsgebäude oder Papierdrachen unten am Fluss verkauft. In anderen gibt es eine Frau, die an jedem Feiertag ihr Haus mit mehrfarbigen Lichtern und Fähnchen einrichtet. Normalerweiße sind solche Menschen nichts mehr als kleine Figuren am Rand jeder Aufmerksamkeit, aber wenn sie sterben, kann es überraschender als der Tod eines bedeutenden Leiters sein, weil keiner sie gründlich betrachetete, um darüber nachzudenken, was ihre Abwesenheit eigentlich bedeutet.

Born in 1991, I am a native English speaker originally from the county of Somerset.
I originally moved to Germany in 2011 and, from the outset, invested myself fully into learning the language. I spent two years at a language school full-time whilst also working full-time at a bar in the city of Bonn. This mixture of structured learning in the classroom and application in an everyday setting with locals was perfect for me to excel and learn the language quickly.
I then decided to take this to the next level and study German as part of my degree. I received top marks for my studies and was trained to an extremely high level in translation. As a result, I possess a wide knowledge of the theoretical and grammatical side of the German language along with the practice and experience of using it in an everyday and professional setting. This proved worthwhile when I was able to showcase my skills as a translator for the German Press Agency. I embraced the responsibility I was given in my first transaction role and excelled in the demanding and fast-paced environment I found myself in.
