Boeing betting on the 747 for long distance destinations
Dubai – By Ali Al Samadi
24 November 2012
The US giant aircraft manufacturer Boeing is betting on its new 747-8 long distance jet accommodating over 400 passengers to strengthen its footprint in the long distance destinations market, where its 777-ER jet met with huge success and is indeed the lady of long distance flights.
The Boeing 747-8 jet is the latest model of the Boeing 747family of commercial jets, and was officially unveiled in 2005. This model, with a longer fuselage, redesigned wings and upgraded efficiency, is a radical shift from the 747-400 and is the heaviest US production, commercial or military jet.
Given its success in selling 130 of the new jet so far; including 60 passenger and 70 freighter versions; Boeing hopes to sell more of its latest commercial jet over the coming few years.
Boeing is offering airlines both the Intercontinental and Freighter versions of its 747-8 jet model. Compared with competing jumbo airliners and freighters, these jets offer the lowest operational costs and highest cost effectiveness, backed by an improved environmental performance as evidenced by their 15% lower CO² emissions and 30% lower noise levels, compared with the older 747-400 model.
The latest member of the 747 family accommodates all the requirements of airlines operating 400-500 passengers’ airliners, thus bridging the gap between the 555 seats Airbus A 380 and the extended distance 365 seats Boeing 777-300. Simultaneously, 747 Freighters are still the world’s leaders in global freight markets.
As usual, Boeing assessed the feasibility of its latest 747 family jet for quite a long time, and coordinated with airliners and freighters to accommodate their needs and requirements. This came at a time when airlines were looking for reducing their cost and maximizing their profits to meet the challenges facing the industry, mainly in the form of high fuel costs and taxes.
Boeing’s design of the 747-8 relied upon cooperation with its clients and adopting the innovative and highly advanced technologies of its 787 Dreamliner, which are obviously going to inspire the design of its future jets.
The 747 jet family was selected to establish the technical continuity between the 787 Dreamliner and the latest 747 model. Ever since 2005, Boeing started the production of the new 747 jet and delivered the first of its passenger versions to Lufthansa last April, allowing the German airliner to launch flights to Washington. The company also managed to sell a VIP version to an undisclosed client.
The passenger version of the Boeing 747-8, offers 51 additional seats over the previous model, can accommodate up to 567 passengers in three flight classes, enjoys a 26% additional freight capacity, a totally redesigned cabin interior inspired by the 787 Dreamliner and a new staircase design.
Joe Ozombic, Deputy President, 747 product marketing, Boeing, ascertains that the freighter version of the new model does not face any competition in the freight market, because its maximum 139 m/t load capacity including its offloaded weight allows it to generate 16% more returns compared with the 747-400 freighter jet. The freighter’s additional space of up to 4221 c/m allows it to accommodate four more two levels major freight palettes, in addition to three other lower level palettes.
Longer distance
The range of the new jet’s freighter version is 8010 kms, thus allowing freight airlines the choice between taking profitable extra loads of up to 22 tons and flying an extra distance of up to 2593 kms, in less capacity demanding markets.
The new jet further strengthens the legendary efficiency of its older version, maintains the same flight costs and reduces freight costs by 16%. Cargolux took delivery of the first freight version of the new jet last October.
Both the passenger and freight versions set a new benchmark for fuel efficiency and noise reduction, by reducing fuel costs shouldered by airlines and allowing them to schedule more daily flights. The 747-8 indeed offers more savings on fuel consumption compared with the previous version, is quieter with noise levels down by 30% and enjoys a high takeoff and landing sound insulation quality.
This jet can safely deal with all kinds of airports worldwide, including those that can accommodate the 747-400. The new jet’s efficiency takes the lead from that provided by older versions on taking off and landing in airports, especially in that it relies upon the same indicative estimates and services.
Improvements
On November 14, 2005, Boeing announced the launch of an upgraded 747 jet and christened it as the Boeing 747-8. The new jet uses the same engine and cockpit technologies of the 787 Dreamliner, allowing it to enjoy a clear competitive edge in fuel efficiency and noise levels.
Being an upgraded version of the older Boeing 747, the new version’s fuselage was extended by 5.6 metres over the older 747-400, raising its overall length to 76.4 metres and making it the world’s longest passenger airliner. Compared with the 747-400, the main technical changes were introduced to the wings, thus making it subject to a full design review, while the structure of the mainframe and the wings’ retraction angle were maintained. The wings however are thicker and deeper.
The passenger version of the new jet will carry up to 243.120 liters of fuel, while the freighter version will carry 230.625 litres. The extra fuel carrying capacity of the wings dispensed with the need to drastically redesign the horizontal stabilizer, as compared with the older 747-400 model, thus saving some costs.
In order to reduce weight, carbon fiber reinforced plastic was used in some parts of the fuselage. In general, the structural changes as compared with the older 747-400 are rather developmental than radical. The 747-8 also enjoys stronger wings with improved aerodynamics.
Wings have one slot external flaps and two slots internal flaps. The wings’ ends are upswept and similar to those of the 777-200, and 767-330 and 400. This design reduces whirlpools originating from the wings’ ends and affecting their side edges. They also reduce turbulence and pull forces behind the aircraft, ultimately improving fuel consumption efficiency and reducing its consumption.
The GEnx general Electric developed jet engine; one of the two engines offered for the 787 Dreamliner; is the only engine available for the 747-8 airliner. Different versions of the 777-8 jet will however be adjusted to provide an air bleeding system to the aircraft’s traditional systems, and will be offered in smaller size diameters to suit the wings. The one-sided agreement between General Electric and Boeing means that there will be no other suitable engine to equip the 747-8 over the next ten years.
The 747-8 Freighter
Transporting half the world’s freight, the Boeing 747 family aircraft have proved their efficiency as freighter jets. In order to maintain their leadership, Boeing designed a freight version of the 747-8, dubbing it as the 747-8F, in an initial design destined to oversee its service access. This version’s upper deck is shorter than that of the passenger version.
The wings of the 747-8F are 5.6 metres longer, while its maximum takeoff weight is 440.000 kilograms, its overall load capacity is 140.000 kilograms and flight distance is 8275 kilometres. The aircraft has 4 loading bays in the main deck, in addition to one extra bay that can accommodate two additional palettes and two additional storage bays in the lower deck.
Although endowed with a larger cargo capacity, the 747-8F’s distance is shorter than the 747-400ERF. When Boeing launched the 747-400ERF, 35.000 pounds were added to the maximum takeoff weight capacity, thus allowing that version to carry more fuel and land while weighing the same of a 747-400F. Cargo airlines such as Cargolux carry machinery or indivisible cargo lots and consequently require larger weight cargo space and better landing capacity.
467 passengers
The passenger version of the 747-8 can accommodate 467 passengers in three classes (economy, business and first) and fly them for a distance of 14.816 kilometres at a speed of 0.855 Mach. This version carries 51 passengers and two extra cargo palettes. Although the initial prototype was shorter than the F freighter version, the following ones will have the same length, in order to be able to carry more passengers and make converting them into freighters an easier job.
While the upper deck of this version will be longer, its new technology engines and aerodynamic fuselage amendments will extend its long non-stop flight distance.
Boeing proposed to introduce some changes to the jet’s interior cabin design, mainly the interior staircase leading to the upper deck. The staircase of older 747-400B and 747-300 models was more perpendicular and narrower, starting from the kitchen near gate 2, to the left of the upper deck’s end. Following a request by Lufthansa, the staircase in this version is more inclined and was removed to the left, although it was designed to be on the right side. In their turn, windows reached the upper deck’s staircase’s well, that is not to mention the windows that already exist in the upper deck itself.
