Source text - Arabic وجدت آخر الدراسات التقييمية بأن تدهور نوعية المياه وجودتها في منطقة نهر الدلتا قد أدت إلى نقص في مخزون السمك؛ الذي أدى إلى تقليل الصيد وهبوط الدخل للعوائل التي تعمل في الصيد. مع ارتفاع معدل الأمراض المنتقلة عن طريق المياه، بالتحديد بين العوائل الفقيرة والأطفال تحت سن الخامسة.

The current situation is the result of the discharge of fecal waste, household and business refuse, and inadequately treated wastewater in the river.
Some of the numerous factors that contribute to the problem include: Low public awareness of the dangers of dumping household waste. Low access and use of sanitation facilities for the disposal of fecal waste. Furthermore, the Environment Protection Agency’s oversight over the local textile industry has been ineffective and sometimes corrupted. All these factors have led to high levels of fecal waste and household/business refuse in the river. As a result of low budgets and poor planning by local government even among businesses that treat their waste, treated waste-water does not meet environmental standards.

Goal:
• to explore protection issues children face in the community
• to explore why some children do not come to CFS
• to identify if there are children who are discriminated
Materials needed for each group
Flip chart paper
Large markers, several colors
Colored squares (5 red and 5 black), one set for each participant (to represent ‘places like to visit” and “places do not like to visit”) = total 30 red and 30 black squares.
Two small pads of sticky notes or small squares of paper (to represent “needs”)
Glue stick or tape
Tacks or pins
How to Conduct a Mapping Activity
Divide participants into two groups.
1. Ask each group to:
Draw their communities (village or camp), beginning with some central feature
(road, tents/houses, school).
Encourage everyone to participate, at least in determining what should be on the map, if not doing the actual drawing.
Watch the time; make sure each group begins to draw at least halfway through the allotted time.
2. Once the drawing is done, ask each group to do the following:
Ask each child to put small pieces of colored papers to identify:
• Places they like to visit with red paper in square
• Places they do not like to visit black paper in square
If you do not have colored papers, you can ask children to use markers to draw on the maps.
Remind them which color and shape symbolize what.
Tape or paste the pieces of paper on the “places”.
3. Ask children to use small sticky pads or small squares of paper to draw or
write things you need or want in their community. They can use as many as they
wish. Tape or paste down on the map.
4. Ask the individual groups to look at their own map and the patterns they have identified.
Ask groups to show the other group the map they did.
5. Questions for discussion:
• Ask children why they like and why do not like the places.
• If children say they like or do not like to visit CFS, ask why.
• If they say they like CFS, ask whether there are children who do not come to CFS and why they do not come.
• Ask if they find the places safe or unsafe. Ask children why they find the places safe and unsafe (unsafe places could be points where we can explore issues of child protection).
• If they mention anything related to child protection concerns, explore more by asking: Which children are subjected more often? Boys, girls, age, disability, ethnicity etc.
• Ask children why they want what they wrote or drew as places they want to have in the community. Ask more questions if you find their wishes unclear for recommendations
