Source text - Arabic رن جرس المنبه في وقته، لكني وللدهشة، لم ألمح أثرا للشمس التي اعتادت التسلل من ثغرات الستائر وغمر الأرض بحزمة من شعاعها المبهر، وبدت حجرتي غارقة في عتمة غريبة حتى خطر لي أن الليل استمر أطول من اللازم، فذعرت من هذه الفكرة وهرعت نحو النافذة، وقلبي يخفق مثل طبل، يوشك أن يتمزق.
كان الضباب يعمي النافذة، ويمنع الشمس من الدخول، ويحجز الأبصار عن رؤية ما خلفها، فتمتمت لـ شهرزاد وكنت أظنها تسمعني في تلك اللحظة بأن الضباب الذي يعمي الأبصار قد أشعرني بقسوة حرمان العميان من رؤية الجمال ومنعهم من تلمس بواطن المشاعر في الطبيعة، وهو قادر على أن يدفعهم للتفكير بالرغبة في الانتقام من كل شئ وكل أحد ومن نفسهم أحيانا!
وقلت لـ شهرزاد بأن الضباب فكرة رائعة أثارت حماستي للكتابة، وربما يمكنني الاستفادة من موضوع الضباب للكتابة عما يمكن أن تصنعه العتمة المفاجئة بالناس، وكيف تدفعهم خشيتهم من الظلام للتكور بداخل أنفسهم، فتحولهم تجربة الوحدة المؤلمة والمباغتة التي فرضتها عليهم العتمة القاسية إلى قساة لا يتورعون عن أذية من حولهم.
استدرت باتجاه مكتبي للبدء بكتابة أول خيط في القصة التي جمحت في مخيلتي لحظتها، لكن الأفكار التي خيل إلى أنها تقاطرت ناحيتي بسبب الضباب المنسدل على النافذة، تبددت فجأة، عندما ظهرت شهرزاد وبين يديها رواية البرتغالي جوزيه ساراماغو وعنوانها العمى وقالت بأنها لم تتمكن من السكوت على ما كنت سأقدم عليه، لأني كنت سأعيد كتابة القصة نفسها وكل ظني أنها فكرة استلهمتها من الخيال!
Translation - English The alarm clock bell rang on time, but to my astonishment, I didn't see any of the sunrays used to sneak through the gaps in the curtains and flood the floor with a bundle of their dazzling beam. My room seemed soaked in strange darkness that I thought the night lasted longer than usual. I was terrified by such idea and rushed towards the window, whilst my heart was beating like a drum, about to be torn apart.
The fog blinded the window's view, withheld the sunrays from reaching down the room, and prevented eyes to see what was behind it. I murmured to «Scheherazade», thinking she heard me at that moment, that the fog which blinded the eye made me feel how it is hard that the blind is deprived of seeing the beauty and of being inspired by the grandeur of the nature, which would render them desiring to take revenge on everything, everyone and even themselves sometimes!
I said to «Scheherazade» that the fog was a wonderful idea arousing my enthusiasm for writing, and perhaps I could take advantage of it to write about what the sudden darkness can make to people, how fearing of the darkness pushes them to seclude themselves, and how the painful and sudden isolation imposed on them by the harsh darkness turns them into cruel personalities never hesitating to harm anyone around them.
I turned to my desk to start writing the first thread of the story popped out in my mind that moment. However, the thoughts that I imagined they flowed in my mind due to that fog falling on the window suddenly dissipated when «Scheherazade» appeared holding «Blindness (Portuguese: Ensaio sobre a cegueira) », a novel by Portuguese author «José Saramago». She said she couldn't remain silent about what I was about to do as I would rewrite the same story believing that it was a thought inspired in my imagination!
