Source text - English It was interesting to hear Collin Powell accuse France and Germany of cowardice in not wanting to go to war.
Or, as he put more succinctly, France and German are afraid of “upholding their responsibility to impose the will of the International community.
Powell's speech brings up one of the most outrageous but least examined aspects of this whole war in Iraq business.
I am speaking about the appalling collateral damage already being inflicted on the English language.
Perhaps the worst impact is on our vocabulary, “Cowardice”, according to Collin Powell, is the refusal to injure thousands of innocent civilians living in Baghdad in order to promote US oil interests in the Middle East.
The corollary is that “bravery” must be the ability to order the deaths of 100.000 Iraqis without wincing.
I suppose Tony Blair is “brave” because he is willing to expose the people who voted for him to the threat of terrorist reprisals in return for getting a red carpet whenever he visits the White House, while Chirac is a “coward” for standing up to the bigoted bullying of the extremist right Republican warmongers who currently run the United States.

Source text - English Journalist: You see yourself as jazz musician rather than a rock guitarist. What's jazz all about for you?
Pat Methney: In my case, jazz as a word is something that I associate with improvisational. I mean, and the focus of almost everything I do is to create an environment for myself and the musician that I play with that allow us to involve ourselves in the music in an improvisational way.
Now as time has gone on, particularly with some recent stuff that I've done, I've gotten more and more interested in how to involve te compositional aspects of what I see as being possible in music more an more with the improvisational way instincts that I have as musician.
And, in fact, records like SECRET STORY or the new group record, are involving themselves more and more with texture and a way of looking at the density of music that is quite a bit further along those lines than I ever imagined that I would be.
And part of that is the technology that's evolved, that's become possible, that have made certain things possible for us musicians that wouldn't have been possible ten or fifteen years ago.
I mean, my reaction has been like "OK" there are these new things that are possible, let's try that".
And to me that also is something, if you like at the whole jazz traditional, has always been there: when new things have become available, whether it was the saxphone or a drummer or different combinations of instruments or electronics jazz guys were always the first guys there and often were the people who utilized those things in the most creative ways.
Journalist: Now, you admit to being workaholic. Do you have any trouble though reconciling career as musician with everyday life?
Path Methney: I personally see the difficulties that exists in my life which... are you know, I mean, I don't have a regular life to start with. I mean, it pretty much consumes almost all of the time that I'm awake trying to come up with stuff that is good enough to continue the whole process of doing what I do. Therefore, I've had to sacrifice a lot of things that are normally part of somebody's life by the time that they get to be my age. On the other hand, I consider it to be a real privilege that I get to do it.
Because there are so many people who are interested in becoming musicians who are, in fact, great musicians, that never get to opportunity to do it, to find out what they are as musicians, because unfortunately we live in a culture right now that is pretty much not interested in creativity in a kind of deep sense. I mean, you know, right now we've kind of gone into this period where it's enough to be creativity, to just sort of redo something that's already been done.

Chapter one
Fundamentals
The objective of this book is to study a broad variety of important and useful algorithms methods for solving problem that are suited for computer implementation. Algorithms go hand to hand with data structures scheme for organizing data that leave them amenable to efficient processing by an algorithm. This chapter introduce the basic tools that we need to study algorithms and date structures.
First, we introduce our basic programming model. All of our programs are implemented using a small subset of the Java programming language plus a few of our own libraries for input/output and for statistical calculations. SECTION 1.1 is a summary of language constructs, features, and libraries that we use in this book.
Next, we emphasize data abstraction, where we define abstract data types (ADTs) in the service of modular programming. In SECTION 1.2 we introduce the process of implementing and ADT in Java, by specifying an applications programming interface (API) and then using the Java class mechanism to develop an implementation for use in client code.
As important an, e d useful examples, we next consider three fundamental ADTs: the bag, the queue, and the stack. SECTION 1.3 describes APIs and implementations of bags, queues, and stacks using arrays, resizing arrays, and linked lists that serve as models and starting point of algorithm implementations throughout the book.
Performance is a central consideration in the study of algorithms. SECTION 1.4 describes our approach to analyzing algorithm performance. The basis of our approach is the scientific method: we develop hypothesis about performance, create mathematical models, and run experiments to test them, repeating the process as necessary.
We conclude with a case study where we consider solutions to a connectivity problem that uses algorithms and data structures that implement the classic union-fine ADT.
Algorithms
When we write a computer program, we are generally implementing a method that has been devised previously to solve some problem. This method is often independent of the particular programming language being used - it is likely to be equally appropriate for many computers and many programming languages. It is the method, rather than the computer program itself, that specifies the steps that we can take to solve the problem. The term algorithm is used in computer science to describe a finite, deterministic, and effective problem-solving method suitable for implementation as a computer program. Algorithms are the stuff of computer science: they are the central object of study in the field.
We can define an algorithm by describing a procedure for a solving problem in a natural language, or by writing a computer program that implements the procedure, as shown at right for Euclid's algorithm for finding the greatest common divisor of two numbers, a variant of which was devised over 2300 years ago. If you are not familiar with Euclid's algorithm, you are encouraged to work to EXERCISE 1.1.24 and EXERCISE 1.1.25, perhaps after reading SECTION 1.1. In this book, we use computer programs to describe algorithms. One important reason for doing so is that it makes easier the task of checking whether they are finite, deterministic, and effective, as required. But it is also important to recognize that a program in a particular language is just one way to express an algorithm. The fact that many of the algorithms in this book have been expressed in multiple programming languages over the past several decades reinforces the idea that each algorithm is a method suitable for implementation on any computer in any programming language.
Most algorithms of interest involve organizing that data involved in the computation. Such organization leads to data structures, which also are central objects of study take the view that therefore exists as the byproducts or end products of algorithms and that we must therefore study them in order to understand the algorithms. Simple algorithms can give rise to complicated data structures and, conversely, complicated algorithms can use simple data structures. We shall study the properties of many data structures in this book; indeed we might well have titled the book "Algorithms and Data Structures".
When we use a computer to help us solve a problem, we typically are faced with a number of possible approaches. For small problems, it hardly matters which approach we use, as long as one that correctly solves the problem. For huge problems (or applications where we need to solve huge numbers of small problems), however, we quickly become motivated to devise methods that use time and space efficiently.
The primary reason to learn about algorithms is that this discipline gives us the potential to reap huge savings, even to the point of enabling us to do tasks that would other wise be impossible. In an application where we are processing millions of objects, it is not unusual to be able to make a program millions of times faster by using a well-designed algorithm. We shall see such examples on numerous occasions throughout the book. By contrasting, investing, additional money or time to buy and install a new computer holds the potential for speeding up a program by perhaps a factor of only 10 or 100.
