Source text - English A competitor analysis is the first step the firm takes to be able to predict its competitors’ actions and responses.
In Chapter 2, we discussed what firms do to understand com-petitors. This discussion is extended further in this chapter as we described what the firm does to predict competitors’ market-based actions.
Thus, understanding precedes predic-tion. Market commonality (the number of markets with which competitors are jointly involved and their importance to each) and resource similarity (how comparable competitors’ resources are in terms of type and amount) are studied to complete a competitor analysis.
In general, the greater are market commonality and resource similarity, the more firms acknowledge that they are direct competitors.

English to Arabic: Ghazali's Discussion of Causality General field: Social Sciences Detailed field: Philosophy
Source text - English Few passages in Arabic philosophy have attracted as much attention as al-Ghazālī's discussion of causality in the seventeenth discussion of Tahāfut al-Falāsifa, along with the response of Ibn Rushd (Averroës) in his Tahāfut al-Tahāfut.
A question often asked is to what extent al-Ghazālī can be called an occasionalist; that is, whether he follows other Kalām thinkers in restricting causal agency to God alone.
What has not been thoroughly addressed in previous studies is a question which al-Ghazālī and Ibn Rushd both see as decisive in the seventeenth discussion: what theory of causality is sufficient to explain human knowledge? In this paper I show that al-Ghazālī's and Ibn Rushd's theories of causality are closely related to their epistemologies.
The difference between the two thinkers can be briefly summarized as follows. For Ibn Rushd, the paradigm of human knowledge is demonstrative science; for al-Ghazālī, in contrast, the paradigm of human knowledge is (or at least includes) revelation. Yet both remain committed to the possibility of Aristotelian science and its underlying principles.
Thus, I suggest that al-Ghazālī's stance in the seventeenth discussion sheds light on his critique of philosophy in the Tahāfut: namely, philosophy is not inherently incoherent, but simply limited in scope. I also briefly compare this position to that of Thomas Aquinas, in order to place the view in a more familiar context.

وكثيرا ما يطرح سؤال عن جواز وصف الغزالي بأنه مؤمن بالعرضية (النظرية الفلسفية التي تقول إن العلاقة بين السبب والأثر والحوادث العقلية والجسدية ناشئة عن التدخل الدائم لله عز وجل) أي إنه يؤيد علماء الكلام في قصر القوة المسببة على الله وحده.
لكن الدراسات السابقة لم تتعمق في بحث مسألة يراها كل من الغزالي وابن رشد حاسمة في المناقشة السابعة عشر .. ما هي نظرية السببية التي تستطيع تفسير المعرفة البشرية؟ وفي هذا البحث أوضح أن نظرية السببية لدى كل من الغزالي وابن رشد ترتبط بشدة بنظرية المعرفة لدى كليهما.
ويمكن إيجاز الاختلاف بين العالمين كما يلي. يتمثل نموذج المعرفة البشرية عند ابن رشد في العلم البرهاني بينما يرى الغزالي أن نموذج المعرفة البشرية هو الوحي أو على الأقل يشكل الوحي جزءا منه. ومع ذلك يظل كلاهما معترفا بإمكانية العلم الأرسطوطاليسي ومبادئه الأساسية.

Strategies have no chance of being implemented successfully when organizations do not market goods and services well, when firms cannot raise needed working capital, when firms produce technologically inferior products, or when firms have a weak information system.
This chapter, therefore, examines marketing, finance/accounting, R&D, and MIS issues that are central to effective strategy implementation.
Special topics include market segmentation, market positioning, evaluating the worth of a business, determining to what extent debt and/or stock should be used as a source of capital, developing projected financial statements, contracting R&D outside the firm, and creating an information support system. Manager and employee involvement and participation are essential for success in marketing, finance/accounting, R&D, and management information systems activities.
Implementation is a Challenge
Less than 10 percent of strategies formulated are successfully implemented. There are many reasons for this low success rate, including failing to segment markets appropriately, paying too much for a new acquisition, falling behind competitors in R&D, and not recognizing the benefit of computers in managing information.
Strategy implementation directly affects the lives of plant managers, division managers, department managers, sales managers, project managers, personnel managers, staff managers, supervisors, and all employees.
MARKETING ISSUES
Marketing decisions may require policies:
1. To use exclusive dealerships or multiple channels of distribution.
2. To use heavy, light, or no TV advertising.
3. To limit (or not) the share of business done with a single customer.
4. To be a price leader or follower.
5. To offer a complete or limited warranty.
6. To reward salespeople based on straight salary, straight commission, or a combination salary/commission.
