It is important for an entrepreneur to raise enough funding so that he can finance the medium and long-term assets of the business. Long-term assets are also referred to as fixed assets and usually include assets that cannot easily be liquidated (converted into cash). Those items are of high value to the organization and are expected to be used during more than one period. IAS 16 states that a fixed asset is an item that has “future economic benefits associated with the item that will flow to the entity.”
Fixed assets have favourable tax treatments because they allow for depreciation.
The usual sources used to finance long-term assets are equity, debt and hybrid financing (a combination of equity and debt financing). Another example of financing fixed assets is to issue either bonds, new stock or through an IPO (Initial Public Offering).
