I tend to receive work from agencies from several countries and direct clients (in Spain and in the UK). I find working with the client directly is more rewarding (in fees and in the interaction), they tend to be more loyal and less demanding, than most agencies. Like everybody else, agencies are not specialists in all topics, but I have been rejected as a translator by some agencies, whilst at the same time, for the last three years have had most of my translated articles published in prestigious medical and scientific journals. I also work as a freelance directly with a Spanish publishing house. Direct clients, although difficult to find, are also specialists in their subject, therefore are also easier to approach with a technical problem in the translation.
I believe agencies are the bread and butter of the translation business, but direct clients are the jam (jelly in the USA).
