I was teaching before, and I used to stand at the front of the class for several hours a day. Now I roll out of bed, plonk myself in my chair and barely move all day... and it shows on the waistline

It is proved by the size of my trousers. Initially, it was 30-32; now it is 38.:)

But I've also gained fifteen years and two children.
But especially since I'm a freelancer. When I used to work in a translation agency, I would go to work by foot or bus+foot, so all the sitting was a bit compensated.

But yes, I have. | | |
gained 20 kg over 3 years and lost 15 kg since 1 Jan 2012 5 kg to go ... Simply because of too much work, long hours, bad eating habits and no movement, I won't let it happen again!

I think it depends on a lot of things, many jobs involve long periods of inactivity. I used to sit at a computer for 8 hours a day when I worked for a bank too. However, at least then I had to leave the house and use a few calories to get there and back and for goofing off whilst I was there (usually walking around the centre chatting to colleagues - I always took the stairs, not the lift). Hmmm, I'm sensing an opportunity here.....the ProZian diet.

My theory is that gaining weight is related to sleep deprivation... Sleep better and you'll lose weight without having to do anything special... It happens to me when I go on holiday or take a month off! Thanks for the responses to the poll! I'm glad to see I'm not the only "fatso" on Proz.com! Leon Hunter

Not in the last 25 years, but I can furrow my brow much more effectively now!

but it has nothing to with translation! I had a thyroiditis almost six years ago...

Leon Hunter Sleep deprivation! this is my brother-in-law's theory and I have to second it - it ruins everything that happens during the day! Now that both my children sleep through the night I don't have this anymore, and feel a lot better for it, weight-wise - BUT Since becoming a full-time freelancer, all this sitting at the desk has done me no good at all, and the kilos are beginning to pile on. I'd buy into the Prozian diet - sign me up Ty!!!

My weight has little to do with my working lifestyle. A few years ago I stopped drinking alcohol for health reasons and lost some weight thanks to this, and also to lack of appetite in my first year of medication (I lost around 17 kilos in the first year). [Edited at 2012-04-23 11:10 GMT] Funnily enough, my latest favourite vice is called a "coca", with walnuts, rasins, choc filling and choc sprinkles and - I imagine - at least as addictive as its vegetable namesake!
