Hace un tiempo recibí un PDF no editable con tablas y contenido jurídico confidencial. Utilicé mi ABBYY FineReader y revisé manualmente todo lo que fue necesario.
Entiendo perfectamente el valor de las herramientas que agilizan el trabajo.
Sin embargo, cuando se trata de documentación jurídica confidencial, prefiero utilizar soluciones que puedo gestionar localmente y revisar cada paso del proceso.
Quizá no me ahorre tanto tiempo, pero me deja la conciencia tranquila en lo que respecta a la confidencialidad de la información.

Of course it's not the AI itself that is going to do the 'unfair competing' ... That part will be done by those having access to everything and anything that AI siphoned one way or another [whatever their legalese has to say ...]

The technical possibility is there, and it's technically nearly impossible to control to which extent it's used or abused. No one knows nothing, until some day you discover some 'new competitor' that seems to have had a miraculous insight in your own data. Surely a 'good competition'?

If I happened to be a very real Alice Gallagher running some legitimate business I wouldn’t be very pleased with your post.

For all you know this 'Alice Gallagher' could be anyone [like some kid who wants to dabble in scamming] or anything [a bot] or ... or ...

But it shouldn't be rocket science to do some basic checks.

What email address was used?

Some 'free' email of the gmail type or an email address linked to a domain name?

Even then, was it a domain name with a website giving REAL contact details?

Some real contact details that you could use to contact yourself directly this 'big transcription company in USA' and check if this supposed 'Alice Gallagher' has any authority to contract on their behalf?

The insistence on bank transfer might be OR NOT an indication that it's a scam IF the payment is supposed to be made by some fake bank. Did you ask for the name of the bank?

Giving only the name used by a possible scammer is not much of a help - OTOH pointing out to the 'not very credible elements' to watch for in possibly scam offers might really help.

I still use the dictionaries and reference books I have collected over the years.
I have kept many of them since my university days, and I have no intention of throwing them away or giving them up.
To me, they have both monetary value and, more importantly, personal value. They represent years of study, efforts, work and professional growth.
One day, when I'm no longer here, I hope they will be donated to someone who will truly appreciate and make good use of them, rather than simply becoming part of an inheritance.

Hi all,

I am having a bit of a specific issue that has never come up before.

My client sends me an .sdlppx package, which I open, process and export in memoQ like I have done dozens of times before.

This time, I got a QA report from my client for a missed TB term that hasn't been showing in memoQ due to a capitalization issue.

The TB entry has "Case sensitivity" set to "Permissive", which apparently means that the term isn't shown if the TB entry uses upper case and the text occurrence is in lower case. When I set the case sensitivity to "No", the term suddenly appears in my concordance window...

This is rather annoying, since my latest Trados license was for SDL Studio 2015, and I haven't had a reason to renew it since then, because memoQ was handling everything just fine. This current issue makes it sound like I may need to find another way to process this client's packages, if TB terms continue to not show up in memoQ.

Any ideas?

Thank you for the reply.
Since contacting memoQ support went nowhere, I posted question to Microsoft Support forum a few days ago.
Someone suggested the same. However, since my most important files are currently stored in OneDrive my document folder, I haven't tried that yet. I can't lose any files there.

@Peter Motte - I understood the question to be placed in the context of professional use in our field, rather than "an item of interest to be read as literature".
I seem to recall my father telling me that his father had a physics textbook that still discussed the concept of ether.
And schoolbooks or not - depends what you need them for - as items of interest, or even if you need to learn something from them for yourself - fine. As tools for use in the 3rd decade of the 21st century - less so.

That said, I have one or two atlases of the world printed in the early 1970s - I keep them as memorabilia because I remember I used to love looking through them when I was little :)

My Oxford reference dictionary is from the 1990s, so its geographical, political sections are long obsolete, but I kept it for other reasons.

The first thing you can / should do is stop it from syncing anything. In the settings remove all folders it "backs up" / syncs.
Then turn one drive off, make sure it doesn't turn on automatically on startup etc.

Then you should be able to safely organize your files as you see fit.

As to removing all links to One Drive - saving new documents etc. - I'm afraid it's a manual tedious process. MS is pretty aggressive about using their stuff - every time Edge updates it insists on becoming the default browser etc.

Have you received an email message with a job offer from Alice Gallagher?

She claims to represent a big transcription company in USA but this job offer looks like a scam offer.

She said to me that she can only pay through bank transfer. She was also very persistent, she was insisting for me to do the job but I'm almost sure that this person is a scammer.

For that matter, your software likely doesn't handle complex XLSX file structures very well. My PC started glitching after I uploaded the file to your platform, and my screen kept flickering on and off constantly. The PC kept behaving this way even after I closed the window and left your platform. It suggests poor handling of unsupported files or xlsx column structures, compounded by bad cache management that caused my system to crash. I wouldn't expect this from a platform managed by an engineering team; these are very amateurish issues for a professional platform.

I uploaded an XLSX file with complex structures and nested columns across multiple sheets, typical of an Excel file I receive. However, your software doesn't allow me to select which sheet and column to use for translation. Could you explain what kind of XLSX structure it supports? I can't find any documentation on your platform.

I completely agree that a good terminology database evolves throughout a project. In fact, that's one of the ideas that inspired Hlossary.

Our goal isn't to compete with the advanced terminology management found in established CAT tools. Those tools are excellent and have matured over many years.

Hlossary is aimed at a different workflow. After the initial AI translation, users can build and refine project-specific terminology, store it in a web-based database, and apply standardized terms consistently across large Excel-based projects. We developed it to simplify terminology management for users who don't necessarily work with a full CAT environment but still need consistent results in large-scale localization.

I agree that, in practice, the most valuable glossary often evolves during the translation process rather than being completed beforehand. That's actually one of the ideas behind our Hlossary concept.

You can also visit the Blue Board to see how other translators have rated the company. In the case of the company that you mention, they have a 1.1/5 rating. Paid members of ProZ.com can also see the comments that other members have left, but for 1/5 ratings you don't really need to see it to know what the reason is.

It is against ProZ.com forum rules to mention specific outsourcers by name, so your post will likely be hidden from view in a few minutes/hours, unless you edit it and remove the company's name.

Hello,

I have been contacting memoQ support for help, but they are basically sending me the URL only, and I haven't solved my issue yet. I would really appreciate if you someone can give me step by step instruction, as I tried many times but the issue hasn't been solved yet.

When I launched OneDrive by mistake, OneDrive started to sync everything on OneDrive. Most of the files in memoQ is still stored in OneDrive, and when I try to set up a new project in memoQ, memoQ stores any new projects in OneDrive document file by default.
Before I launch OneDrive by mistake, everything was working very smooth. MemoQ was storing projects to local folders automatically, and I had no issue. I want exactly the same setup as before.

I checked my memoQ setting, and the default location is set to "My memoQ project" folder already.
However, the biggest problem is, path to "My memoQ project" was changed by OneDrive to:
C->User->OneDrive->Document->My memoQ project (the path to Document goes through MyDrive).
How can I change this to C->User->Document->My memoQ project (to avoid going through OneDrive)?

It is not only the memoQ issue. For example, when I download something, Windows path always go through MyDrive.
It looks like everything is already tied to OneDrive, and I don't know how to completely unlink it.

That's a great example, and exactly the kind of real-world workflow that inspired us.

Repetitive strings are very common in game localization and large Excel projects, so even small improvements can save a significant amount of time.

After spending around 15 years working with CAT tools and managing localization projects, I found myself solving the same kinds of practical problems over and over.
