One of the main improvements is that 2026 is finally 64-bit, so it can handle VERY large projects, assuming you have enough RAM.

Another is the new termbase format, .ttb, which completely replaces the buggy old .sdltb system. The new system is still under development, but is coming along nicely.

And there are some other small improvements: e.g., you can change the text size in comments, yay!

Indeed, as people have mentioned here, you can mess around and recreate Studio packages manually, as they are zipped folders. However, this is fiddly and error-prone. YMMV.

In general, I'm super happy with Trados Studio 2026, and it has replaced memoQ as my daily driver. memoQ is just too damned slow these days to use comfortably. Trados still has its failings, but the grid is a pleasure to work in for extended periods.

Hi guys, I just wanted to mention that I have released an MCP server that lets you connect Claude for Desktop to Trados Studio, using Supervertaler for Trados as a bridge.

Once you install the MCP server, here's an example of the kind of thing you can do in Claude for Desktop:

In the chat, you can basically ask Claude anything, and Claude has direct access to your actual Trados Studio project. That is, it can navigate to actual segments, edit text in segments, run all kinds of QA and other tools on your project, consult term bases and translation memories, add or remove or edit comments, etc. Playing around with this today has been absolutely insane. And the craziest thing is that I built the whole MCP server in a single day! That is, Claude Code (using Fable 5) built it, with my dictated commands via Wispr Flow.

I am adding more functionality to it daily, but it is already extremely powerful. I did some proofreading of a gigantic project in Trados Studio 2026 today, and combining my new Supervertaler MCP Server with Wispr Flow for dictation has taken things to a whole new level of fun. Li-Hsiang, thank you for the specific tip at the end of your reply — session management and a random port. I implemented both today. The app now picks a random available port on launch (which also eliminates the occasional "port already in use" startup failure), and the session cookie is hardened with HttpOnly, SameSite=Strict, and a 12-hour lifetime.

I highly appreciate that you took the time to be constructive rather than just critical.

If anything else stands out to you as you think about it, I'm genuinely interested.

This study examines the semantic role of the introductory formulas in Albanian fairy tales and in their German translations in Albanische Märchen, focusing on the way the non-deictic voice of tradition frames the entry into the imaginative universe of the tale. The introductory formula, understood as a stable configuration of signs, maintains its meaning through repeated use across generations and establishes the ritual mechanism through which the narrative act acquires its symbolic significance. In this perspective, the opening of the fairy tale is not simply a linguistic device but a cultural threshold that marks the passage from ordinary reality into the mythical space of collective memory. The analysis approaches the phenomenon on two interconnected levels—intersemiotic and intercultural —in order to trace how the structure of non-deixis becomes a coded signal of imagination and cultural recreation. The findings indicate that the introductory formula attests to the continuity of memory and to the adaptability of Albanian culture within translation, where the non-deictic voice of tradition persists as a way of thinking and storytelling that remains active through the sign.

Your gradually does not apply.
A BigMomma TM with a few unreviewed and/or MT TUs is a barrel of honey with a spoonful of sh*t, you won't eat it.
If you know that the TM contains garbage TUs, you must check any document consisting only of exact matches, that is the reality.

A practical advice is -- develop a routine which provides the exact amount of changes you made, give your customer a preliminary quote and ask them to accept the final analysis. I heard about tools which do this, but my homegrown routine is:
= save the target as you received it
= do the editing, convert the bilingual data into a TM, reverse it
= analyze the cr@ppy saved target against your TM which has your perfect output as source.
This will give you the numbers, exactly like we have been doing it for decades.

Speaking with the numbers at hand helps. An average NNMT segment is worth from 75% (the best ones) to 90% of the new word rate.

Exactly. A colleague drives an old Hyundai Getz, generally a good small car. The rear door edges are curved, and the rubber seal is a straight extruded shape, it collapses at the bend, and the rain water gets in, fortunately there's the inner seal. When it rains, you get off and close the rear door, this curve shoots a few drops of water into your face. The savings were tiny, negligibly small per car, but these morons have calculators, some bright mind discovered that they could save ten thousand money across the five years of production. About the same in translation.

When I started translating the concepts of personal computers and Internet were at best 'some silly science fiction'. More than once I would take the trouble to find who are the experts in the field I'm translating and phone them. When they sense you can understand what they are talking about they would give you plenty of very helpful information. Nowadays you can do a web search instead - certainly much much faster but NOT ALWAYS better.

Or you could use Augmented Ignorance - which definitely IS NOT better. More like relying on some smooth talking sycophant blessed with a tenuous grasp of the concept of 'accuracy/verified facts'. You can't stop 'progress', right?

As for totally idiotic ways of 'saving on costs' I've seen many examples in other fields I worked in - it's not really a 'translation-specific psychiatric condition'. More to do with dumb penny pinchers who imagine that it’s 'being a good manager'.

Fair point for Flask deployed as a public-facing web service — the guardrails concern is real there. PTI binds to localhost only, so the Flask instance is not reachable from outside the user's machine. My understanding is that the threat model is fundamentally different: an external attacker can't reach it without already having access to the user's machine, at which point Flask is the least of your problems.

Would you say that changes the picture, or are there localhost-specific Flask concerns I should still be addressing? [/quote]

For me personally, pressing a button on the ProZ.com website is just as easy as pressing a button in the browser's add-on pane.

Traditionally speaking, most translation agencies have their 'go-to translators' in every language pair. This might have been you back in the good old days, commanding 0.10 to 0.12 EUR per word, and getting picked for jobs ahead of those charging 0.05 or 0.06 EUR per word.
DeepL empowered bottom-feeders (those charging 0.02 to 0.04 EUR per word) immensely in the last 4 years or so. They're no longer the same incompetent creatures making appalling, laughable mistakes. So if you lose your 'privileged position' with the agency for whatever reason (like by taking one vacation too many or being unavailable through illness or injury), they are there to replace you in a heartbeat, and you won't get any jobs from them even if you've halved your rates. That's unfortunately the reality with most agencies. I must have been onboarded with hundreds of agencies, but never once have I received any requests from them, because their 'go-to translator' in my pair has never taken a vacation or got hit by a car.

I was just thinking it'd be useful to have a button on ProZ pages to instantly switch back and forth between daytime and nighttime modes, rather than setting my browsers to show everything either dark or bright.

Sorry for not making that clear.

Maybe others are less sensitive. I just prefer dim lighting, as long as the text is legible. My screen doesn't need to dazzle me and light up the room I'm in. :-)

I’m working on a translation and have enabled the pre-translate function in the project, linking my TM first and then Language Weaver’s NMT. I’m wondering why, when I translate, it accepts the NMT’s suggestions rather than those from the TM (which I’ve set as the first source with a 70 per cent threshold; it won’t let me set it any lower). When I confirm my segments by editing the Language Weaver output, I notice that the segments not yet edited retain the NMT output, so I am forced to replace the NMT output with the result from my TM every time, even though these are very repetitive segments. I’ve chosen to update only my TM and not Language Weaver. Could this be the reason? If I update Weaver, does it affect the ‘confidentiality’?
What would you suggest me to do? Thank you in advance for your feedback!

If customers would be only interested in low rates, and you lower your rates by 50%, then you become just one of the zillion translators that somehow are willing to work for rates that are way too low. I can imagine it hardly increases your chances to get more work, let alone decent work.

My theory is that it is all about finding customers that still value quality (so disregard bottom-feeders that are only interested in paying as little as possible and pay even less if they're not happy with the quality you delivered for their miserable offers). They exist, I know that, because all of my important customers do. And after you've identified those customers it's about being able to determine your rates in a way that your customers can accept them and that you are able to make a decent living, also called the optimal price/quality ratio.

This is the theory, I know it must be hard. I've been lucky to be able to establish long-term relationships over the last 21 years that continue to last, and I've also been lucky that I've always had rates that were never perceived as way too high by anybody. Because of that I know that my price/quality ratio is very much on point.

'Lower prices = higher demand' was always a rather simplistic model to explain real-life economics.

You get the Giffen Paradox to confuse things, but that one can hardly be relevant for 'translation services' - except for the rapidly shrinking 'market segment' giving top priority to quality.

When it comes to the vast bulk of the present 'translation market' maybe some new model would be in order, something along the lines of 'rearranging the deckchairs' as a novel way of dealing with the AI iceberg?

My understanding is that the threat model is fundamentally different: an external attacker can't reach it without already having access to the user's machine, at which point Flask is the least of your problems.

Would you say that changes the picture, or are there localhost-specific Flask concerns I should still be addressing?

The default view is called "native mode" but it doesn't affect the new ProZ.com mobile-friendly home screen. When I deselect "native mode" and tried "simple dark 1" mode, things get better.

I started doing this for my posts on Proz, long time before they added Cloudflare.

Are you using a VPN to change your location? E.g. to New York? Perhaps that helps?

I've found that Cloudflare is uniformly slow enough to be annoying, even if it's just a checkbox and doesn't require the identification of cats or trams. On some sites, you even have to go through it twice. I use the tinyurl link shortener quite regularly, and sometimes you get the regular Cloudflare check page before you even get to the site, then you get a second check before you can shorten the URL.

I can understand the second part of that, as they don't want bots using up their bandwidth and processing time, but not the first.

But the ProZ implementation is certainly one of the worst.

In fact, it just did it again! When I went to preview this reply, I suddenly found myself confronted with the Cloudflare check. At least this time it didn't redirect me arbitrarily. On one similar occasion, after passing the humanity test I found myself on the home page, my carefully crafted message having been irretrievable lost.

These days, I always press Ctrl+A, Ctrl+C before clicking on 'Preview'.

It's a small framwork, OK for small community share. But for production, it is weak without extra security mesures. It dosen't have built-in guardrails. You should build all that architecture and security implementation on your own.

So if you didn't do that, your Flask app remain a prototype with potential safty concerns.

That said, it's OK to share. Just keep in mind, this app won't be able to withstand attacks. Don't say it's safe.

Does anyone know if ProZ.com has a “dark mode” that users can switch to?

Especially when browsing the site in a darkish room at night, I find the screen can be very bright. A dark mode would be easier on the eye (and also attract fewer insects).

I've checked the forums but couldn't find anything on this, so it doesn't seem to have been discussed before.

Would anyone else find a feature like this useful? Or is it just sensitive me? :-)

(P.S.
Maybe I should add that I've only ever used the original (non-updated) version of the site, the one available when I joined in 2002.)
